Original 1931 Karloff life-size sculpt with lights....

Hello everyone,

I'm a new member and wanted to say "Hello" to everyone. Some people here know me and some don't but I'm glad to be a part of this board and will be showing some of my work in the future.

I recently sculpted and built up four life-size Boris Karloff pieces, three in true color and one in a black and white paint scheme. It took several months to sculpt the head, mold the arms and sculpt the boots. I wanted to be as realistic as possible within reason. I contacted Sara Karloff to ask her about her fathers boots he wore in the film. From looking at close up photos of his boots from the original 1931 film you can see what appears to be silver or light colored tape and glue wrapped all the way around the boot...I believe they took two boots and cut them into one and taped and glued them back together. Sara said her father wore 1 1/2inch lifts to make him taller. Being 5 foot 11 to begin with it appears the iconic monster was only around 6 foot 2 on the set.

I wanted something different and special for my piece so I designed and built a 2 x2 foot base for him to stand on. I built in vintage looking lights with a hidden dimmer switch which is the round bolt on the front of the base. He's even chained down so he can't get loose.

The head has high quality prothstetic eyes and custom neck bolts. The arms are cast from my own with added veins for realism. This piece is almost to scary to keep in the house especially at night with a dim light on him.

The photos below are my piece along side my custom Jacobs ladder and the other is a customers monster he purchased from me.

Very nice. Do you live in the DFW area? I could have sworn I've seen that Jacobs ladder locally.

Wow!
What a beautiful piece of work, you really have a lot of talent!
The sculpt is so lifelike, and your attention to detail is wonderful.
May I ask why 4off? Is this what you do for a living?
Look forward to seeing more of your work.
Phil

He was at the Prop Party at Philip Wise's house in February. I met him and his brother, 2 super nice guys who make awesome stuff.

Looks amazing !! :thumbsup

Hi everyone,

I do live in Dallas, Texas and I was at Philip Wise's prop party with a few of my pieces including a Jacobs ladder. I am an artist and musician and have made up prototype pieces for a few prominant companies in the past. I also do custom work for people. I made up four of these life-size Karloff pieces for customers and sold all but one that I still have. I designed and built 6 Jacobs ladders working props for customers also. I sold four of them and have a couple still. I pride my work on detail and going the extra mile for people. I like giving good fair prices because everyone likes a good deal especially in todays world.

Brilliant! Absolutely Brilliant!(y)thumbsup
I even love the scenic work on the base!

A couple long time members here have this Karloff monster I designed. I also used the mold for the head to make a few other Karloff busts. One is a Karloff Frankenstein bust on a lighted base. It has a plasma ball built into it with prop volt meters and I'll post a couple photos coming up.

For anyone who is asking...I cannot discuss prices in this part of the forum. As soon as my 90 days are up I can list items in the junkyard...thanks....Douglas Hildebeast
