Orig Factory X Sword of Maximus, Rare?

The other day a friend and I were going through my closet of collectibles, or as my wife calls it 'junk', and I ran across my gladiator Maximus sword I bought back in 2000 when I was on a several month waiting list.

* It is an original Factory X Sword of Maximus, Item #17501, not a knock off

* Best as I remember (could be off a bit) I bought it new in Dec/2000. I was on a waiting list.

* I still have the original black and white box sleeve, inner 2 piece box, and all styro and slip on padding. Also the original shipping box. the box is not excellent, but it is the same condition as I got it back then.

* The 10 years I've owned it the sword/scabbard has been in the orig box or on display in a climate controlled, non smoking home. Never played with and probably 'handled' less than 5 times.

* I would say the condition is near exactly as I got it new, (so EXCELLENT to LIKE NEW) except for the fact it's 10 years old.

In anycase, I was wondering what some experts here (more than my knowledge) can tell me about the rarity, and approximate value. I heard they stopped producing them in 2002 and are quite wanted and collectible?

Not sure I want to sell it so please no offers..

This is a spur of the moment question, just looking for opinions and information.

I can take some pics and post later, just don't have time at the moment.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Here's why I am asking for any realistic opinions.. There is little information on existing "orig Factory X" versions, and I found this site just checking around.

Sword Of Maximus FactoryX Original

Is this for real, and is this realistic? I figured it may have gone up in price due to scarcity, but this seemed like out of the norm. :confused

I have seen a number of these Factory-X versions sell on Ebay over the past six months. They generally sell between $100 and $200. I have one I bought a few years ago and it is a nice replica but that company trying to get $3,800 is nuts. I am not sure how many were sold since they weren't numbered but I would not consider them all that rare.

While I totally agree that the link for the $3800 is not realistic, I still believe that the $100-$200 sales you mention on ebay is low, and may not be for a true Factory X original, or not in mint/ like new condition with all original packaging materials. I would still think in that condition it would hold it's $3xx. plus value to the right audience.
But I could be wrong. :confused

I also had the original Factory X helmet of Maximus back then, and sold it some years back for something over $4xx, but it had a custom paint job (matched the screen used details) the person wanted and liked. So hard to judge on some things.

Thanks for the advice though..

I had two mint in box along with the Dracula sword and bowies they made. Sold them on Ebay on a ten day listing in May and only got £45 and £58 for them. Can't even sell the Dracula stuff. Sadly there is no demand now.

The Factory X sword is something of a rarity here in the UK, which i also think is the case in the USA - They have been long out of stock on many websites.

Now a decent replica could knock you back around £65, and they are still available.

I've only ever saw two of the Factory-X swords come up for sale - One on a collectables website around 6 months ago, which was advertised at £350 - And did indeed sell at that price
The other was on ebay a number of years ago, now the price it ended at escapes me, but im sure it was in the £120 region.

I guess it's value depends on many factors - However on a good day i could see the sword achieving around £250 to £300
I may be well off, but thats how much i would expect to pay (tops) if i was in the market for one.

Approx $450 - $600 US dollars... This was my thinking as well, (more like $400-500) but you have seen it in reality. Thanks for the information both fact and opinion that you have shared. It is very helpful.

It will be seen what the market will bear "on a good day" as mentioned.

In any case, if I do decide to sell it, at least I figure I'll get what I paid for out of it, and a wee bit more maybe? :) You never know.

Thanks again..

Mark

On the flip side though, i paid around £350 for the Factory-X Maximus helmet way back when, in fact it was my very first prop / collectable.
The helms however, new, are selling for £99 on ebay and a used one anything between £50 - £100

At least you should be able to realise your money back on the sword, funny because you think it would be the other way around, the helms hold their value as they are the most iconic prop from the film, and the sword not so much. I guess though its all supply and demand based, there was probably more helms sold than swords!!

There were two difference versions of this Factory-X sword.

Version 1: Limited Edition (750 pieces) "Guard and pommel adorned with 24k gold plated decorations. Leather wrapped wooden scabbard with 24k gold plated tip, throat and accents."

Version 2: Don't know the edition size, brass instead of 24k gold.

You will notice that on the web site that you linked to, they have the brass version listed for $79.

There was a factory warehouse that sold a lot of the factory X stuff in Tennessee, in a little town in the middle of nowhere for next to nothing, quite a bit of the Factory X stuff got dumped for next to nothing likely due to poor marketting and distribution. If your's isn't the limitted edition version you may take a bath on resale, especially in this economy unless you can find a collector who's looking to part with his money. Good luck.

I think you need to re-read that brass version for $79.00. It is listed as a "Replica of the Factory X Original", meaning that it's a 'knock off' copy of the Factory X original replica. Look at the egg shaped pommel, and other features that are off, not to mention no 'DreamWorks trademark stamp on the blade', etc...

I'll get some pics up eventually, but I have the original year 2000 version, and it's not the knock off like so many others sold without the original Factory X and licensed DreamWorks/Universal Studios trademarks.

You have no clue if the sword of maximus was in that factory x "stuff" and I have a pretty good idea that I'll not take a bath unless I decide to sell it in a haste.

I am not even planning on selling it, but was just looking for information. I see it's a bit mixed up and all over the place.. Anyone with an eye for replica swords can see that this is a nice piece, and I've seen tons of swords that are not name brands or even movie replicas going upwards of $250.

So when the time is right, and in a better economy, if I decide to sell this legitimate Factory X Maximus Sword, I'm sure I'll come out fine. Been selling here and there for over 30 years. Both here RPF and Ebay for over 11 years now. No real losses yet.

Thanks for the insight though.. :)

I just snapped these pics quick with an old 2.11 mega pixel camera. The Nikon CoolPix 950 that 25 (or so) of us members on the RPF board bought here in a group buy some 10 years ago as well. The lighting doesn't work out so hot with flash close ups though. You can see the flash and overhead lights reflecting in the shiny wood finish. It is really beautiful wood without the flash(s) showing.

I also had to wipe the original oil (kinda stiff and gooey) off the blade to show the trademarks I was talking about. No discoloration of accents like many of my other display swords, so who knows...

Well that would explain the low price for that one! :lol

Either way, there were two different versions released by Factory-X, I know because I owned one of each (I ended up keeping the gold version and selling the other). Do you know which version you have?

Nope, but I wish I did. Heck I didn't even know about 2 versions. I just remember between this sword and the helmet (which I bought as well) that they were the hottest things going at the time and a waiting list was enevitable.

I was happy 10 years ago to finally get them. Funny how many things like that happen to us when we really want something, and how time changes things.

Still love it, just changing my mind on what to collect, where to store it, and other factors.. :)

From what I saw on that website I think that $3800.00 price is a typo that should have read $380. With that small a website an oversight like that would be easy to miss, and that would put it in line with the other licensed weapons they sell. I could be wrong since I didn't have time to go through the whole site, but from the prices listed in this thread by you and others I'm wagering that's why it's like that.

Yeah, that does sound about right, or they are smokin something.. :cool

Now you've go me wondering if there is anything that definitively shows which version a particular sword is. I will take a look at mine and see if there is anything (I definitely have the 24k gold version).

Hi, I hope you were able to answer all your questions about the Sword of Maximus. If you still have question let me know as I am the founding partner of the original Factory X.
I would be happy to clear up an confusion there may be. One quick note; be very careful when purchasing any of these swords as the were many knock off produced and they were crap. The sword pictured in this thread is genuine and appears to be a great example of this prop.
