Opinions on changing a design... (Marvel Related)

Hello RPF, long time lurker first time poster.. I would like to thank everyone on this site you have all given me such great ideas and helped me (help) create many costumes for friends. With that said I would like an opinion.

For years I've wanted to do a Deadpool costume and I have never been down to the weight I would care to be. I am getting closer but the more costumes I see the more I think to myself, "It's all spandex" I understand why heroes in comics wear spandex (or similar) material, it's easier to draw but it leaves me with a question and I would love the opinion from you.. The costume community.

Is it okay to change a classic look to make it look more "realistic?"

Take batman.. In the comics and cartoons he has a skintight spandex(ish) costume however in the Arkham video games it's more "armored" the same can be said with comic Deathstroke.. Yet look at him in Arkham Origins and even Arrow.. They kept the original feel to the character but made it more "real"

So Deadpool hasn't been changed over the years, at least no more then the placement of red and black. Would it be considered Costume Taboo to make it more realistic? Instead of pure Spandex giving the costume a kind of armor? Not a plate carrier, something closer to Snake Eyes in Retaliation.. Light weight plating if you will.

Let me know. I sadly don't have a working scanner or I would upload the idea that I came up with.

Edit: I do apologize if this type of thread has been posted multiple times. I did some lurking around and searching for something similar but did not find anything.

I don't think it matters what anybody else thinks. You're going to meet people that are really into accuracy, getting every tiny detail correct. And there will be people that bring together ideas from different sources. For example, a cosplayer might want to create Batman if he existed in the world of Bioshock. Or harley quinn in the world of Borderlands. They each have a different aesthetic, but pulling the details together can lead to something new and original.

Do what you want to do. If the key features are there, in deadpool's case, the red/black color, the swords/weapons, but it has new elements introduced that make sense for the character, I think you could end up with something unique and special. Unless you're entering contests at cons that call for accuracy, just do what makes you happy.

I recommend changing it. I like to see costumes imagined how they might exist in 'real life'. What works in comics (spandex spray-painted on Ken dolls) doesn't work in the movies. If people look at you and say you look like Deadpool then I think you succeeded. And maybe they'll take your visions and put them in the inevitable Deadpool movie... :)

IronManiac:
Thank you, I will definitely try out my concept design for Deadpool. I guess I've always worried about the "purist" because Deadpool has (over the years) become one of Marvels most beloved character. Also, I am imagining a Borderlands style Harley Quinn... That is a costume I would kill to see made lol.

Boshusa:
I've always enjoyed what the marvel movies do to the costumes. Take Captain America as an example... His costume is true to the comics in both look and feel without having to be skin tight and clingy... I'm sure this upset a few women watching the movie but I've never agreed with it in the real world. Even Deadpool with his healing factor wouldn't "WANT" to get shot... Okay, bad example.. I'm sure somewhere in his twisted head he doesn't mind it but I think you get the point.

Thank you to you both. Once I get my scanner fixed I'll toss up the sketches and probably end up making a build thread. I've helped friends out and I would love the insight from the community.

I have a video of my Deadpool Vs Armageddon 2013 costume. It is not drastically changed. But I didn't like the idea of full spandex so went with a more military spin on it as well as white contacts and black face paint to show more facial expressions that can't be achieved with a full face mask.
I think changing it from the spandex/comic/traditional version is fine. If Deadpool had his own by now than I'm sure we would see a completely updated version like the X-Men movies. Even if you look at all the batman variations across all mediums; the suit has always changed but key elements in the design make it easily recognisable.

Great vid, joker squad! Loved the interviews.

I really like the face, white contacts and black facepaint works really well. Could you even see out of the contacts though?

Look at Bat in the Sun's "Batman vs Deadpool, he's got the spandex as well as some plating like the shoulders, elbows and knees. I personally love seeing both accurate screen and print costumes, as well as completely original takes on the idea as well. Good luck :)

I imagine 'real life' Deadpool would wear leather more than spandex. It would be a tactical leather jacket with pockets and zippers with layers of black rubbery armor. Same with pants and tactical boots.

you could use the game as a refference or even the leaked movie test footage. it looks like its designed to look leather. I'd personally say have a seamstress do it in a canvas material(kinda like tactical pants) because you will be less likely to die of heat stroke

JW, Have fun with it. Consider all of the comic artists that change the design or style of a character, you'd be doing no different. That is what sparks interest and keeps all of this alive. If it were'nt for people like all of us life would be pretty boring.:cool
