I am looking for 3 more people interested in making screen accurate versions of the original aluminum R2-D2 from the first Star Wars movie. I have modeled the aluminum dome race from the original blueprint and verified that the models are accurate to the film used props. Each of these will be CNC milled from a single piece of aluminum with no seams and no welds.

I am ready to have parts made. I would like to make both versions of the race both with weight relief holes and without weight relief holes. The cost of the parts go down significantly if the parts are made in a lot of at least 5 parts. I'd like to give it a couple days to see if there may be a few other people interested in having these made at the same time, otherwise I just move ahead with a set for myself.

Price goes down to..........what exactly? Did I miss the price point being posted somewhere?

That’s what I call dedication! Good luck and please post pictures of your results!

I’m far from building a R2 unit so I’m no help with buying one of these but I’m sure you’ll find some interested here since it’s uberaccurate and this is the RPF!

Have you joined the astromech forums by chance? The aluminum parts offered by the members there seemed to be priced pretty fairly and they are about as accurate as you’ll find. Figured I’d mention it. Good luck with your build!

Thanks for the suggestion. In my case, I am interested in making a unit that is accurate to the first Star Wars movie. The geometry of this dome race is accurate to the aluminum units made in 1976. From what I've researched so far, this sort of thing is not available anywhere else and would need to be made from scratch.

Robert is correct. If you want a movie accurate R2 unit you're on your own. It's a monumental undertaking.

I have an order for 10 of these coming on 3/31 at Project Runs
These were created using both the original blueprint and with input from Neil Anderson the original machinist that created the original props in 1976.
Really excited to finally get the Kenny versions physically made.

These work with the granite earth domes?

I have a Granite Earth dome.
It requires a flange like on the original ANH domes.
I 3D printed out three temporary flanges until I can get a project together to make a replica one that is continuous and aluminum like on the originals.

I have video of the granite earth dome, but it doesnt look like the fourm will host it directly.
Here is a photo of the Granite Earth dome with the resin flanges on display at the SolidWorks convention.
