On a Scale of 1-10 What is the most Awesome Prop/Base Gun Combo

Using a scale of 1 -10 (1 being lame and 10 being awesome) post your best prop/base gun combination and assign a value to it.

Two examples of what I consider to be in 8-9 range are - Leon's Blaster in Blade Runner, it was based on a COP 357 and Jane's main pistol from Fire Fly, it was based on a Lemat Revolver.

IMO, these are pretty awesome props that used very unique and interesting guns so they would rate higher then something like the Pulse Rifle from Aliens. It's a pretty awesome prop but it used common guns so I would just give it a 6.

Sticking strictly to sci-fi, post your submissions for review below.

Pictures are required and discussion of the rating is encouraged.

This has been used in a lot of movies, television and video games.

It is one of the most unique gun every made and needs very little to make it a convincing sci-fi prop.

For those reasons I say it is a 10

Well for uniqueness how about the SE-14R from Star Wars? Based on the Rexim Favor submachinegun with the stock and barrel removed. the R variant had a single scope seen in promo shots and now commonly in the EU and the C version with two scopes is seen on screen. It has also been used in the Alien series as well. To me it is worth a 6 or 7 because I like the look and simplicity of the conversion ans the rareness and obscurity of the gun.

Another interesting rifle is the Morita Assault Rifle from Starship Troopers. This ridiculously large gun was based around fully automatic Mini-14's (AC556). Certainly a strange choice, then again they weren't ever meant to hit anything since the rifle has no real sights converted. Shoved in there is an Ithaca shotgun as well. For bastardizing a ******* of a weapon to the point of no recognition I award the Morita 8 out of 10 points.

Well, I assume for this to work they have to be guns that HAVE a base. Cause if not, i'd go with D'argo's Qualta Blade from Farscape. I LOVE that thing. But other than that, my favorite sci fi gun is Mal's from Firefly. I give it a 9. It totally hides the original gun for starters. Also, it both looks very sci fi and cool, while at the same time manages to keep that wild west feel. There's very few guns out there that have the same feel in my opinion.

The gun used in the film was never altered, or combined with other parts. It may have been painted darker, and they did alter the firing pins to fire two rounds at once, but not sure if it counts here.

Deckard's gun I do think should be up near the top of the list though with at least an 8 or 9. The Time Cop gun is also a fave, and still looks good to this day but since it is based on a common gun might not be as cool to you. Maybe the point is just about the really cool and or rare base gun.

I could not agree more. I love both Mals gun, and D'Argo's Galta blade. :) I have two Mal pistols, and I want another one for costuming, and I woudn't mind getting one of the movie versions too. :) And the Galta blade is near the top of my dream prop list.

Do you mean what is a prop combo that is both an awesome prop and an awesome base weapon? Or do you mean to draw the contrast between junk turned into movie magic?

In general I prefer free form Sci-fi gun designs. Can't stand the "add-on" to current weapons mentality. Hate it.

So they all get a zero for me.

Give me a Phaser or a Logan's Run Sandman Pistol any day.

...and yes even in Star Wars. Although, it gets a pass, because one it's Star Wars, and two it's Star Wars.

It’s hard to say exactly what I am basing my scale on.

It has to the extreme unique or rare qualities of the base gun and how they were used the accent or create the feel the prop.

I didn't Select Mals Gun because it used a common gun and completly hid it.

I was under the impression the Leon's gun from BR was modified, there is info that suggests a radically modified grip.

But if it wasn't, that would drop it out of contention

Yeah, I agree. I don't like it when watching Sci Fi and seeing what looks like a contemporary pistol with some crap glued on it.
Sometimes they are very well modified, but if I can't tell and it just looks like a regular gun, what's the point?
I, too, love the original phaser design and the LR flamegun.
I liked the way the original TNG phasers were done, but just didn't care for the design that much.
I did like the intent to make it "not" look like a gun.

They planned on altering the gun and making it Deckard's gun. Stephen Dane did some sketches showing the concept, it was scrapped as was Syd Meads concept. I think once they scrapped the idea of making it the hero weapon, they just reused it for Leon's gun as is.

I have to agree with Mal's gun and D'Argo's Qualta blade, although I would add in Crichton's pusle pistol from Farscape as well, even though there isn't a base for it. :)
