Actually I ended up finding the thread on the ASAP board and it was playskool2000. I've already PM'ed him for info because the pics he posted were down.
McDavis, yes, ThowingChicken on the GB Fans board is offering an excellent wand kit. I've ordered two of them. But the barrel tip is not mechanised.

Very cool. I may have come up with another solution. Since I have a set of wand plans I've been tinkering around with the mechanism for the last couple of hours. What I need to know before I move any further forward is how far is the tip supposed to project out?

Very great job, and impressive proton pack.
As crazy as it sounds, I thought about doing a "modernized" proton pack, basically, the idea behind it being that Ego and Ray updated the packs over the years, even in some cases recycling parts from the old proton packs. And they made the packs even more light weight, fixed some of the problems with the proton packs, and even integrated the PKE meters into the wands to cut down on reaction time for switching from one piece of equipment to another.
Of course, I decided not to go through with it because one of the things that makes the proton packs memorable is the way it looks and the fact that it could be really unstable to use. Actually, I like the fact that they updated the proton packs in the recent "Ghostbusters" game only slightly to accommodate the gameplay. Of course, in the game, the proton pack still retains it's iconic appearance, even with the modifications.

That's a great idea but not exactly on topic. If you have an idea for the tip extention mechanism, please feel free to post it.

I used a spring from a toilet paper roll dispenser. As for how far the tip extends, there is no definite length, just generally around 5" or so.

Yeah, it may only extend out by 2 1/2 - 3" from the starting point but the length of the exposed barrel is about 5" or so over all.
