I've just disocvered the new Battlestar Galactica series and would like to build a Viper for a I'm stuck in the house, winter project. I've built a few models over the years but not a lot. Is there a kit out there that's better than the rest and it is it something a guy like me who doesn't have a lot of experience could do? Thanks guys.

Nothing out there for the beginner.
Only Garage Resin kits and most need intermediate skills.
Try a few of the smaller resin kits you may have luck with them.
Look at Ebay, Starship Modeler or Federation Models.
Good luck with the Resin kit if you decide to tackle it.

PS: Beware of the health hazards when working with Resin kits.

I have one of the original releases and it's a great kit.
I don't think that "a guy like me who doesn't have a lot of experience" would be up to tackling this advanced a kit.
That's just my opinion and not a fact.

:) I need something easy to get me going. I did a couple of Tie Fighters and they turned out okay, but I'm looking for something a little more.

Actually, I'm in a similar boat with John, I'm looking to try my hands at some modelling myself, but could use a point in the right direction.

We should start a noob club. :)

The best option for a relatively inexperienced builder is probably the 1/72 Black Sun viper from the SSM store:

It's a resin kit, but it's well-engineered and pretty straightforward to build. The only fiddly part is the vacuum-formed canopy. The 1/72 Raider kit (excuse me, "Galactic Enemy") is even simpler to build, but the subtle natural-metal finish is probably a little trickier.

Ahh don't be afraid of resin. For the most part id you take your time wash everything well and file/sand where needed to get a tight fit the build with CA of most resin is not too bad. the occassional pourly molded kit is a different story, but you should not have that problem with most of the kit that are out nowadays the resin casting techniques and the resin it self is much better then it was 10 years ago...

I find the tricky part comes in being able to adequately weild and airbrush, but I've also seen and gotten pretty decent paintjobs from a rattle can and crushed pastels ;)

Pinting you can practice on just about anything, and as far as buildign the resin take your time, learn to use glazing putty (sparingly if you can), and how to carfully sand the joints to make them flush anf then take your time gluing. you should be just fine... It is different from styrene - but not something to fear...

I agree with Jedi Dade, if you're fairly mechanically inclined then building one of the resin Viper kits that are available shouldn't be a problem for ya, especially considering how nice these things are looking out of the mold.
