Nike Mag's - It's About Time - VIDEO!

Re: Nike McFly's - It's About Time - VIDEO!

Joel McHale is awesome! Just heard rapper Kid Cudi won 4 pairs. Not sure which size or for how much but WOW

Re: Nike McFly's - It's About Time - VIDEO!

This sucks. They should have released a greater amount of normal shoes and made the eBay auctions LED outfitted shoes with autographs of the cast.

Re: Nike McFly's - It's About Time - VIDEO!

I have a hunch that Nike will make this available to the public in 2015. I think there will be a limited number that actually lace up. Nike have filed the patent, and it's long enough after the auction for nobody to be bothered.

I still don't see how you can make the shoes self-lace WITHOUT sacrificing the original design of the shoes. I really don't think there is enough "real estate" in the design of the shoe to accomidate the elecronical components necessary to make it work.
It could work for another design - but then we won't have exact replicas.
I have a bid in right now and winning.....but I am sure that will change so I am not getting my hopes up.
I am really crossing my fingers that the average percentage will continue to decline.

What about placing a motor in the sole (specifically heel) or the 'hump' where the 'Nike Mag' decal is? The amount of power necessary to pull tight laces + strap isn't that great. I'm sure there are motors + batteries small enough to do the job.

Re: Nike McFly's - It's About Time - VIDEO!

They would be trying very hard to make it work within the established design of the shoe when it should be the other way around. Im no engineer so I cannot say if it is impossible and I'm sure Nike is thinking about it. It's a gimmick. Is it really practical? Can a motor so small have enough power to pull laces and keep them tight?

Re: Nike McFly's - It's About Time - VIDEO!

Yeah $300,000 less today.

I will guess that tomorrows total goes to only $400,000, peoples attention span is not what it used to.

Personally I hope that the averages go back up! I have a family member with Parkinson's and appreciate what MJF and Nike are doing to raise money.
Sure there's a big difference when you're talking $3,000 vs. $5,000 but if you can really afford $3,000 to drop on a pair of shoes there's no reason you can't afford $5,000.
Do I want a pair of McFly's? Hell yeah, but there are plenty of deeper pockets out there. I don't feel bad losing out to someone when it's for a good cause.

Agreed….!

What about those "It's about time" T-Shirts all the Nike staff were wearing during the event? Those could be sold to also raise money....there are MANY ways to bring in MORE money for this disese by taking advantage of the popularity of this movie franchise.
Aside from making more of the shoes, there could be other BTTF related merchandise that is produced specifically to help raise funds.
Even those ceramic figurines could have been made in higher quantities and sold to raise funds.

The laces only have to be powered tight, they would just lock them in place after that. I agree about having to retrofit to the design, but the circumstances are what they are; the design came first.

I refer to my sketch here I thought of in 01-15-2007:

If we don't think too complicated - I've got an idea, but I don't know if that works. Here's a sketch of what I thought (sorry for the crude one, haven't been sketching a long time):
lacingsketch.png
The elastic white bands are held in channels which have on each end holes for nylons straps, all connected to a main strap, which is activated by the thin pressure sensor under the heel. A ultra strong micro-motor starts winding up the the main strap and tightens the elastic bands. A clamp would secure the strap when the motor stops. For unlacing the shoe, you press the release pressure sensor behind the light sheet with the Nike logo. A control chip supervises the motor, clamp, release, photo-diode for the night sole and side LEDs light-up. That's what came into my mind for power laces - not complicated, but maybe working (minus the sound effects :p)

Darth Annibal posted on the Nike patent of the power laces:

I really hope they didn't "got" the idea from my sketch - according to WIPO, they filed the patent on 05.11.2009

Re: Nike McFly's - It's About Time - VIDEO!

I went to a couple of the events out here in LA. It's a great time to be a BAck to the Future fan. I must say, though, these events were populated mostly by sneakerheads rather than BTTF fans. Luckily, Nike catered to both groups with their events.

I took a bunch of photos of the events. I tried to get a few close ups of the props on display at The Montalban Theater event. Here's a link to my photos.
