Hey Guys, I've been reading this site for a while and I finally joined and I just had a few questions.

What do you all use to build? Kits? or do you make your own stuff? or put a bunch of different kits together?

And if kits, where do you buy them?

Thanks for any help!

Hi Hunt!, welcome to RPF!

In short, the answer to your questions are.....yes.

many of us build directly what comes out of the box
or OOB

some of us combine two or more kits (kitbash)

and some of us create something from nothing more than
raw materials, this is called Scratchbuilding.

I personally look for kits on Craigslist, because you can get them extremely cheap i.e. no more than $20

Others find them on Ebay, but most of us go to the good old fashioned Local Hobby Store (LHS)

Hope that helps!

Brandon

Welcome, Hunt.
In regard to kits, of course there are the standard MPC, Revell, Tamiya, etc. that you can find in hobby shops or different web stores.
For a lot of "niche" subjects, like a lot of us sci-fi fans enjoy, you can sometimes find someone who produces more limited-run resin (or multimedia) kits as well.
Starshipmodeler.com is a great source of info on sci-fi and fantasy builds. They also have an online store where you can check out some unusual or non-standard offerings.
Brandomack was right about the kitbashing and scratchbuilding, too.
For a lot more insight into those techniques, check out some of the threads in the Studio Scale modeling section.

What kind of kits you're interested in Sci Fi, Ships, Armor, Aircraft, Figures, Real Space, Cars, etc?

While it's best to support you LHS if no hobby shop is near you (like in my case) there are lots of on line shops, some are more specialized towards certain subjects.
They also very in price and selection so shop around.
Some also have better service than others.

If you're interested in the standard fair in models (non Sci Fi) then I would suggest doing a lot of reading over in the Fine Scale Model forum.
There are lots of other forums out there but FSM makes a good starting place.
Some forums are specialize for things like Aircraft, Subs, Cars, etc that can usually be found in a quick Google search.
Some areas have their own forum and even builder clubs that meet once a week or month.
