New Zealand Iron Man -(update 1.20.14)- display upgrade

Re: New Zealand Iron Man -(update 2.2.13 - Partied hard, won $1000!!)

Hi,

Im sure I can fairly easily describe it. I take it you mean the actual switch that turns them on and off?

When you have Iron Man gloves you will notice that when you make a fist, there is a gap at each knuckle (looking at the back of your hand). When you straighten your fingers out these gaps close up. What I did was take one of the wires which goes from the battery pack to the light, and cut it, and then bared each end of this cut wire, so when I touch the wires together the light comes on. Then one end of each wire is glued to the armor pieces on each side of one of the 'gaps' made in the first knuckle of the ring finger. So when a fist is made the light is off because the two wires are seperated, but when the finger is straigtened, the two wires touch together and make the light come on.

Ive attached a beautiful paint picture to show a side view of a finger with armor ontop to show what I mean.

I should probably point out that this switch, while simple, is also problematic. Gloves often move around enough to cause the wires to stop meeting each other when you flex your fingers. I also found that the wires had a tendancy to come unglued as you use your fingers an awful lot.

A much better solution would be to use a reed switch and magnet, which would give you a much greater degree of freedom in that the parts dont have to touch, just be near. Using the magnet on your forearm and the switch in the back of the handplate would probably be my ideal solution.

Very cool man, Like I told ya before your suit is one of my fav:thumbsup

Re: New Zealand Iron Man -(update 2.2.13 - Partied hard, won $1000!!)

I used a reed switch in the faceplate for my stepdaughter's MKVII suit to activate the eyes when it was down, and it worked fantastically. As long as the magnets are strong enough/close enough to interact it is awesome. You can even add additional magnets to the switch (which I did) to ensure the fields meet enough to consistently activate the circuit.

Re: New Zealand Iron Man -(update 2.2.13 - Partied hard, won $1000!!)

Yeah, reed switches are definately the way to go. The one on my faceplate worked flawlessly everytime for the two full days I wore the suit for and is still going strong. Theres no wear or oxidation issues, no misalignment problems, it baffles me why you would choose the 'washer-magnet' arrangement instead!

Great build.

My friend is doing one as well and hopefully in time for either ECCC or SDCC.

Re: New Zealand Iron Man -(update 2.2.13 - Partied hard, won $1000!!)

Thanks guys :cool

I decided to try and give a little back given all the awesome memories the suit brings.

I set up a charity auction on the New Zealand version of ebay called trademe.co.nz

I auctioned a replica arc reactor I made, with the promise that it would be hand delivered by 'Iron Man himself' (IE me in the suit). It ended up making $245 which im pretty happy with as itll all go to the local childrens hospital. Im looking forward to trying to do other cool things with the suit as well! How did the finishing and the paint job hold up? I was noticing some pretty gnarly bends going on and was wondering if you had any tips to prevent it

Hi mate. The suit has taken a beating to be honest. Ive probably worn it for upwards of 30 hours so this is not unexpected. The paint is quite badly cracked and creased in most places now. But a lot of this has been from how I treated it while wearing it, which was that i just stopped worrying about it.

There are currently only two ways to prevent this happening. One is use stiffer foam, the other is reinforcing the foam (modpodge, urethane etc). My suit is quite tightly fitting too which means a bit of wriggling putting it on and this can further stress the finish.

From a few feet away the damage isnt too noticable though, and I can always respray it later :)

That's awesome mate! Well done :). My Patriot will be rocking out a pre-screening of IM3 tomorrow night as well ;)

Sweet! Ive been following the progress of your IP suit and it looks awesome :D

Re: New Zealand Iron Man -(update 2.2.13 - Partied hard, won $1000!!)

Awesome! Ever since one of my Star Trek friends started his Marvel Superhero Action Group (where they Cosplay as random superheroes for childrens' benefits and Make-A-Wish events), things like this are why I'm building my suit. Yeah, it is cool to wear to Cons, but this is how we get to be real superheroes!

Re: New Zealand Iron Man -(update 2.2.13 - Partied hard, won $1000!!)

Sensational Dynofiend, Im just starting mine and other than Stealth with the hero tutorials, this has been my motivation to actually stop thinking about it and actually do it! :)
Fantastic work with the kids hospital as well. :thumbsup

Thanks Daborg and Willo :)

Im heading back to the children's hospital next week for another surprise visit. I cant wait :)

Wow man, to be the best part of those childrens day is really beautiful. Best thing ive ever seen on this site. Great work.

Re: New Zealand Iron Man -(update 2.2.13 - Partied hard, won $1000!!)

Thanks in no small part to this thread I've decided to take the plunge and get a suit built. I'm thinking of a Mark VII, mostly because I'm 6'4" and will have to do a small bit of additional midsection... upscale. Ideally I'd like to have it done by this time next year, but I've got some work to do on my other current Ghostbusting equipment (sound chip for the pack, additional gadgetry for the car's roof rack).

I'm especially enchanted by the inexpensive electronics you've added. I'd love to explore the possibility of a dual-circuit reed switch for the palm repulsors; have them lit the whole time, but when the switch is engaged it'd cause additional LEDs to "flare" and would be coupled with a sample of the charging sound.

Thanks for documenting your work so fully; between these and the video tutorials earlier in the thread I feel quite confident!

Re: New Zealand Iron Man -(update 2.2.13 - Partied hard, won $1000!!)

Best of luck. I do like the idea of the dual-brightness repulsors very much, and it should be very easy to achieve! Have fun on your build and feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions that you cant work through :)

Re: New Zealand Iron Man -(update 2.2.13 - Partied hard, won $1000!!)

Just a wee update for those that don't follow my page on Facebook (probably most of you haha!).

Pictures from my latest hospital visit, and one of a new sign I laser cut for my storage cupboard :)
