Question New trend, locking and not merging (answered)

What is with the locking of duplicate threads instead of merging? I can see when there is only the original post, but there have been other threads with a couple responses that were just locked. Why not just merge them all?

If there is no new information and the post is simply a repeat of the original, the thread is locked with a link to the original thread. There is no need for multiple posts in a thread with the exact same link to the subject matter (especially when there have been 3,4 or 5 duplicate threads).

If there is new discussion or information in the duplicate thread, it's usually merged. It's definitely a judgment call.
