NEW! (Metal) Cross of Coronado - Progress Thread

are we spinning on a 12 inch pie or gravity pouring from the bottom?
you are clearly very talented but i have at my disposal a team with a combined 30 yrs exp in spincasting and may have had similiar problems in the past.
is it a voiding problem or pourocity?
pardon my nosiness.
have several items made by you and all have been of the utmost caliber

This is a bit big for a spincaster. So, I've been pouring the metal into preheated molds. I don't normally cast something this big in metal, but it's coming along nicely.

I think all these guys think this is a progress thread that is leading to a for sale thread. Are they wrong? Just curious too.

For now, it's just a progress thread. Please, no discussions of price or interest. I don't want to get a C&D.

Yeah, my bad too. I posted something about that earlier.
Everything looks really good - the best cross replica I have seen yet.
I would like to see someone do the Crystal Skull too...:love

The Christmas holiday is creaping up and I'm running out of time to continue working on this. I can say that this is coming out with great success and it will definitely be finished either at the very end of this month or early January. At that time, I'll be able to show off the finished piece.
Some really great news to share, is that I found a place that will not only gold-plate it, but do an antique gold finish!:love:thumbsup

Examples of the finish!

So do you think you might be doing 3 crosses to show us, gold, antique gold and brass??

Will your corpus be lighter in colour than the film used prop:

Is it me or is the corpus much darker than the rest of the cross??

I really am looking forward to seeing the finished thing, I just know it's going to be amazing!!!!

Thanks!

I'm making the executive decision and going with the Antique Gold and be done with it.
It seems to be the best compromise for people who like the gold and people who like the brass.:thumbsup

It can be difficult to nail down the right color in the pic you posted above due to the lighting effects, but since the cross is supposed to be gold and very old, the antique gold-plated finish is the way to go. Especially, since it brings out the highlights as if a brass patina would.

I also ordered one little strand of Akoya Natural Pearls to see how round they are and if they'll be an acceptable pearl to use. If all goes well, then I'll use the Akoya pearls instead of the fake enameled ones. That way, there will be all natural materials on this cross! So, cross your fingers!:love:thumbsup

Sounds like a good choice to me!!

Thanks,

p.s. Good luck with the pearls, that would be a bonus on this cross!!!!

Great news Brenton! I think antique gold will be' perfect. I cross my fingers also for the real pearls ;)

I love those executive decisions! They always save time, do away with a million "I think you should do this" posts and they come out great. Good call.

Well if you ever did offer one an aged brass would be my choice to purchased lol.

Love the sharpness mate. Well done:)

So this is an actual clip from the movie and the actual prop? What will you be using for the blue inlay?

This is the actual prop from the screencaps that have been posted previously.
I'll be experimenting with a couple of different options for the blue enamel part, but it looks like dark blue resin will be the best option.
I can't use real glass enamel, since the cross will melt in the process of baking the enamel on, which needs really high temperatures to melt.:unsure

RelicMaker, for the dark blue, go to Michaels and look for the stained glass acrylic paints, they should fit the bill nicely and look pretty identical to the screen prop. They have just enough transparency:eek:pacity to suit your needs too. Color choices are practically endless. :)

I thought about using the stained glass acrylic paints, but I'm afraid it will be more difficult to achieve the same effect that is in the picture below, than if I were to just use slow-cure blue-tinted clear resin. Plus, I think even the the stained glass acrylic paints have to be fired to cure and give the same effect.

Sorry, I won't have anymore progress pics until around the holiday or a little after.
