NEW Latex TESB YODA HEAD

Hi Guys...

Ive been working on this Latex version of my Yoda sculpt for a little while now... Its designed to be animated and was always my main ambition when starting this project... I had this idea of entertaining kids at Hyde Fundraisers events etc by having him sitting on a kind of tree trunk and talking to the children and entertaining them. Anyway, heres the fruits of my labours.

Looking forward to finally getting a start on making up the rest of the body...

Very Cool.

You gonna use a Waldo system? or will he be a Puppet?

Can't wait to see this finished :thumbsup

excuse my ignorance... but, WHAT is a waldo system?

"waldo's not a system he's a man." :p

I could definately do with something for the eyes.... but if I were to use that approach ... either foam latex or very soft silicone might have to be used with that skin.

Cheers

Good idea, i used to use a full size yoda with an a remote controled head, it had eye movement and jaw movement, i built a small camera in the body and used it to interact with people for promotions etc.
The head was just latex with a fibreglass core and i used a basic two channel remote

Done a few years ago now, the head is a bit cringeworthy, but it worked with the kids
Hopeyou dont mind me hijacking.

i think this looks exellent cyb.

can hair strands be punched into latex?

oh and how do you paint latex?

z

Actually, latex is the ideal material in which to punch hair into and will look very realistic as a result. Nick Maley has informed me that pepper grey Yak hair was used for original puppet :)

The best paint to use on latex are acrylics and I'm intending to dry brush mine, first, with a darker green then work back into it with some cotton wool soaked in alcohol. Then finish it off with some air Brushing. The overal effect should be very close to the screen used puppet.

Add some latex into your base coat or you will get cracking off the paint, fw inks are good over a latex base coat, they dont seem to crack with movement

you sure the paint wont crack?

is it best to mix with latex as frosty said?

what kind of acrylics, the stuff in tubes are bottles??

z

I would allways mix in latex to your basecoat when painting anything that has to move , acrylics are flexible to a point but they will crack, you can mix any acrylic paints really, i have used various brands and they all work fine, it must be acrylic though, anything else and you will get a gunky mess, i have heard of people using univeral colorant but i have never tried it.
50/50 latex/ paint or whatever works for you, the paint will dry slightly darker with the latex in so test it on an unseen part and dry it with a hairdryer, and remember when you add it to the white latex and mix it in that colour will not be your final dried colour.

If you use the paint sparingly and as frosty said pigment the latex the main colour you should be fine. Acrylic only seems to crack for two reasons... If its been applied to thickly or to early in the latex's curing process. The latex must be completely cured by being left in a warm dry room for 2 or 3 of days. Like I said earlier, just dry brush areas and melt the paint back a bit with alcohol then use the air Brush. Both these processes are done over an already pigmented latex and should never crack when dry.

I've tried mixing paint with latex and it only seems to peal off and reduce the surface detailing. This method also results in a slightly glossy finish.
