NEW Jack Sparrow Compass Toy

Just got back from Disney World -- saw the Jack Sparrow show next to Pirates of Carribean ride -- fun, but Jack does not pose for pictures afterwards -- they have script written to cleverly whisk him away at the end of the show.

No POTC merchandise that we haven't already seen elsewhere -- but I did find myself in a Disney Store in local mall and they had a new Pirates toy set out -- I thini it is the fabric MAP from World's End and what looked like an eye patch, and earring and jack's green ring -- all kiddie size.

The set DID inlcude a new toy compass -- it appears to be a NEW mold.

The size looks right, and when you open it up there is an actual spinning compass paper/plastic disk beneath the "sundial" type bezel. I didn't buy the set ($12.50) but it looks like you could pry up the inside plate to replace the compass dial (it is printed in ghastly orange and green colors for some reason -- oh yeah - to appeal to KIDS ) and I suppose you could repaint it *(it is molded in dark brown plastic with painted on gold side bars.

If I didn't already have two other toy versions, I would have picked this up. No leather strap or even a fob to attach a strap to, but if you haven't picked up the other compass toys -- or are a completest for "compass" props, you might wanna check this out.

You can not see the inside of the compass the way it is packaged -- my wife was kind enough to yank it out for me without destroying the packaging when we were in the store, and then put it back undisturbed.

I am AMAZED that they don't sell these compasses individually at the Disney resort gift shops -- NO compass toys to speak of....just a lot of plastuc swords, pirate hats, plastic jewels and wooden psitols/flint locks.

Sounds cool. I guess I will have to hit my local Disney store to check this out.

What can you tell us about the "Jack Sparrow show" at Disney world? I was there in July and they did not have that.

I am going to Disney World later this month. I would like to know more about it too. My wife and I are big Jack Sparrow fans and would really like to see the show.

I saw this a coupla weeks back; It's closed in the packaging, so I didnt get a chance to see the inside.
Sounds like it might be worth the 12.50!

I saw it at the Disney Store and the lady opened one for me and I can honestly say it is hideous. My GF and I took one look at the inner dial and said, no thanks! If you can find the spinning compass, it is still a far better toy. This one would be OK for the shell if you were doing a custom, but even the ones that came in the costume packs (non spinning compass) were still better. Just my opinion.

(Ah **** there I go showing off again!)

The Sparrow show takes place just outside the Pirates Of Caribbean ride -- you have to ask park people when shows happen. Itis mainly for kids -- goofy pirate comes out with big wooden wagon and tells some jokes and then asks for some "kid" volunteers who want to learn how to be pirates. Jack Sparrow shows up and the kids are given wooden swords and then each has a practice sword fight with goofy pirate while Jack Sparrow tells them what to do. Last kid actually sword fights with Sparrow, and then Sparrow diverts everyone's attention and runs off through crowd -- this is towards the end of the show. Sparrow never comes back, and Goofy pirate has kids sing a song and raise their hands and take pirate oath, and then the show is over.

it's about 15 minutes long -- and the Jack Sparrow looked great -- good likeness, great costume. But it is more for the kids AND Jack does not stick around to pose for pics or sign autographs.

As for the Disney Store compass -- yes, it DOES look hideous on inside, BUT it is properly sized (I believe) and if you can remove the inner top plate to switch out the compass graphic with one that looks more authentic, it appears to be an EASIER toy to modify than the other spinning toy -- the sundial thing that sits on top appears to be more accurate -- but you would have to add the fob and leather strap.

If you have no intention of modifying a toy, then the spinning one looks better out of the box -- but if you want it to be proper size and intend to paint it anyways, then this new one MAY be a better bet --less work -- provided you can remove the inside top plate without breaking the plastic.

I will likely get one anyways just to play with it -- but my wife rolled here eyes at me when she thought I was going to buy yet ANOTGHER compass (I alreadyh ave two toys, one modified toy, and the MR compass AND a wooden kit I built -- so she was sort of justified with the eye rolling :)
