New Hurdle for Novice Hand -- Mando Flight Suit.

Several days ago a friend of mine approached me, asking if I could make him a flight suit/flak vest combo for a Mandalorian set of armor that he is making. Easy enough for me to accomplish, as I am no stranger to sewing or drafting patterns.

It is still in the very early planning stages, and I am still gathering references and research. This is what has brought me here. He has asked that the flak vest consist of a double breasted front piece. I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around how to make that double breasted piece capable of handling the weight of aluminum armor pieces (his preferred manner of plating), and closure since visible zippers are taboo for the group he wants to join.

I realize there is a lot of information contained on the forum, here, and I should be seeking through the approximately 102 pages to find what I might be looking for. But that's a lot of pages, and a ton of information. I could miss what I need to find.

So, I guess my question is: does anyone out there have any idea of how I could accomplish the double breasted flak vest without creating a strain on the fabric, what kind of closures could be used, and the best technique for attaching the armor pieces to the cloth of the flak vest?

I would definately check out TheDentedHelmet.com. There is a forum for that stuff in there and a few people who do runs on them that would be happy to help you. I do know that I think the vest pattern is that of a cheerleading top patter..but I am not exactly sure the pattern reference number.

another good place to find info on mandalorian soft parts is mandalorianmercs.org .. While visible zippers are frowned upon.. you still could make flaps and such to cover the zippers. Another closure system you can use would be Velcro... Velcro can also be used to attach the armor to the vest it self..

Thanks, Twisted. I had been contemplating velcro. We were also thinking about using metal mounts to attach the armor with magnets, particularly around the knee cap area since I hate elastic. I'll check out the mandalorianmercs web site. I believe that is the group he wants to join, anyway. Thanks again!
