I actually think, after having enjoyed the Norton film, and been bored ****less by the Ang Lee one (ugh), that the Hulk works better on film as an ensemble character.
A good friend of mine said exactly the same thing. He saw
The Avengers Thursday/Friday at a midnight showing, and felt the Hulk simply works better in small doses.
Personally, I think Marvel was in too big a hurry to get
The Avengers in theaters. I'd rather they waited until they'd done at least one sequel to
Captain America and
Thor, and done a good
Hulk movie first; I realize my opinion is probably in the minority.
All things being what they are, I look forward to seeing another Hulk movie primarily because I don't think either of the two previous movies got it quite right. In Ang Lee's
Hulk the origin story involving Banner's father was preposterous and Eric Bana was horribly miscast, but I thought the scenes featuring the Hulk were very much in keeping with what I recall reading in the comics in the 70s. Conversely, in Louis Letterier's
The Incredible Hulk Edward Norton and the live cast were very good, but the CGI was horrid "video game" quality at best. Somewhere between the two was a good movie; maybe the cast and crew of the next Hulk movie will take their cues from
The Avengers and get it right.
