New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

(though, not throughly or with any respect to continuity or story satisfaction).

Biggest problem.

As I said earlier, they may have just moved on in the old series but they give you the "we'll have a tough time covering this up" line to let you know that at least there is some effort there.

New series is just "Ya there's aliens, everyone knows that now" and that doesn't work for me.

Different strokes. I find at attempt at an explanation (no matter how bad it is - even Timey-Whimey) better than just not addressing it at all.

They did attempt though. They said it would be covered up. :D

Good enough for me! I still don't recall any time in the classic series it was so blatant as the new series. Ya, Nessy in the Thames is bad but it's a LOT worse now.

A big thing for me isn't just the explanation. It's why people are shocked to see aliens now. In the new series SO MANY people have seen them SO OFTEN that it should just be every day stiff now but they keep playing the "OMG there are aliens?" thing.

In the 7th Doctor story 'Remembrance Of The Daleks' The Doctor actually remarks that humans have a remarkable capacity for self deception when Ace doesn't remember the Zygon gambit with the loch ness monster or Yeti's in the London underground, and in a later episode 'Battlefield' he shouts 'Yeti, Autons, Daleks, Cybermen and Silurians' at the commanding U.N.I.T officer because she doesn't have a clue who he is.

That explains why Amy's "Scottish Temper" always struck me as so comfortably familliar; McCoy's Doctor had it too. Then again...I married a blue eyed red-headed lass so it might just be fiction matching up with reality in my house. ;)

Whatever scale the invasions, and however successful (or not) they were covered up/ignored/undone by wibley-wobley-timey stuff... All I'm saying is, we need more weird/wonderful/exotic/scary aliens worlds. It's so easy to do these days, too, just drop in a CGI matte-painting background and presto! Instant vibrant alien planet. The First Doctor went to other planets all the time and all he had was a studio with a painted back-cloth that kept showing the actors' shadows (Web Planet, I'm looking at you!). Also they made an effort to make the aliens seem, well, alien. Weird cultural customs, etc. Not like now where its major impressive make-up but basically they're just like us underneath.

Agreed. The main reason I don't like the third Doctor is simply because he was not allowed to leave Earth. I know Earth. Show me something else.

Yes either they are humans made up or they are giant rhinos, wasps, bird headed creatures, pig faced men etc, give us some alien aliens! Like the silence, though why the fudge were they all dressed for job interviews?

I have a suspicion that Clara and Oswin will be two of several versions of the character we'll see. I don't see Clara from the xmas episode travelling with the doctor. I think he'll meet another version in the first episode proper of the 2013 series.

You may be right although why would they do that? 2 of them is enough (in a purely storytelling context :love)

I don't see why it wouldn't be the Victorian Clara. It wouldn't be the first time we've seen The Doctor encounter the same actress with a different name (Gwen, Martha, Amy). In fact, I believe he had a word/phrase for it.

I hit IMDb quotes for Journey's End since that's where he askes Gwen about her resemblence to her ancestor but they don't have that exchange listed. They did have one of my favorites though: Exterminieren! Exterminieren! Halt! Sonst werden wir Sie exterminieren! Sie sind jetzt ein Gefangener der Daleks! Exterminieren! Exterminieren!

Catching up on a few pages. Saw the minisode and trailer. I have no idea how the Clara/Oswin thing will play out. They seemed a bit tongue-in-cheek when they said "playing a totally different character" - so who knows? I thought Oswin was badass so if that was a one off, sort of a waste of a great character.

Maybe Clara becomes Oswin.

I dunno. Anyway, nice to be back. Looking forward to Nu Who in less than a month.

That also reminds me... Martha had the best departure for the new series companions.

First - there wasn't a "no going back" departure (she wasn't trapped in a parallel universe, didn't have some meta-crisis, and wasn't zapped back in time by angels) - Martha's later cameos were okay because the way she departed (on fairly good terms, still in one piece) was clean.

Second - The Doctor didn't mope about after Martha. Her departure was mentioned twice in the "transition" episode, but Donna's episodes belonged to Donna and she didn't have to spend any time "measuring up" to Martha.

Third - Of all the (modern) companions, her post-companion role was the most believable and least annoying.

Fourth - Because of the way she departed, return appearances didn't "compete" with the new companion.

I completely agree. Martha was a really great companion. I really loved Tennant, moping disregarded. Never liked Rose or Donna but The Tenth Doctor completely made up for my dislike of those two. Wish we had seen more of Captain Jack, he was great too.

I like Eleven, he was my first. But I wish Ten had a much longer lifespan. In terms of our years he lasted about 3.5 seasons (3 normal seasons and then a peppering of episodes during 2009) and in comparison to the twelve hundred years that he now has under his belt, 6 (7?) years was not a long run. In a human lifespan that's still very short.

Some people think he became a wimp towards the end of his time. I think that's total bull. He both loved and hated himself in that incarnation. When the chance that he was going to die in battle came up he was usually fearless, because it was sudden and urgent. But hearing a prophecy of his death made him fall apart at the seams like any mortal would. He did what most people would regard as the right thing in the end and then said his goodbyes by saving Martha and Mickey from a sontaran, saving Luke from being run over which means he saved Sarah Jane from the lose of her son, hooks Jack up with Alanso, checks on Joans well being, makes Donna win the lottery to free her from the financial difficulties she was having, and he wished Rose a happy new year. Wide range of helpfulness in these, but they couldn't all be saved or need saving. All The Doctor retains when he dies are his memory and knowledge. His personality and everything that makes him him die. He has a very long lifespan if you think of them all as being the same people but the way I feel about it is that they are completely different people who are each born and die with however long they survived.

Thinking about it I think he would have saved more people by staying in his tenth incarnation than by sacrificing himself. He did the right thing I suppose but Wilf was old, he wouldn't last much longer anyway and The Doctor could have put his self sacrifice to a better use.

Or, here's what I would ideally have liked to happen. The Master is not sucked back into the time lock. The Doctor did what he did last time he was regenerating and only heal himself with the regenerative energy, pouring the rest into The Master so his life force stabilizes, The Master escapes and vwala, life goes on. The Doctor lives and The Master continues to wreck havoc on everyone and everything he comes across, leaving The Doctor very busy.

Come to think about it I suppose this is meant to be about the new series. Woops.
