New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Worst Christmas special was the lame one with the Cyberking, who was actually a Cyber Queen, who was really, really, really, lame. The entire episode was crap.

The need someone who understands why Joss Whedon's dialog works so well. Matt Smith's Doctor would handle dialog in that style very well.

I am going to repeat myself here, but after a second viewing my opinion has been reinforced.

Moffat's big mistake with these Xmas episodes is his determination that they be more Xmas than episode. There is simply no good reason to not make a Xmas episode a good episode that just happens to be set at Xmas.

That being said, it was fun, and I enjoyed it far more than last year's.

I agree, it was good..and definitely not the worst XMas Special. I think the writing was fine...but I do recall people complaining the same things over again. Who fans online are so fickle.

At least we don't have any finales with the end of the world because of Daleks!

Well, just finished watching the Xmas special with my wife. Guess we're the only fans who enjoyed it to the point where we were really touched by the "home for Christmas" theme. :)

I appreciated it for what it was, and am not worrying about overanalyzin. It into something it isn't. Can't wait for next season to start! :thumbsup

I've got to disagree here.

1) If you have a Doctor Who Christmas Special that just so happens to take place at Christmas, you've got Runaway Bride (though, I actually enjoyed that episode). The Christmas episode SHOULD be Christmas themed. This is the one time of year that the episode SHOULD be magical and less science fiction and more of a reminder to The Doctor that the universe is more magical and silly than he knows.

2) We generally need a "sugar" episode. If you try and compete with the previous Season Finale on a meat basis, you're either going to overshadow it, or it won't be as good in comparison. Instead, a nice, fun sugar and sweets episode gives us a break from the drama of the previous season.

3) People want to watch Christmas shows on Christmas. This is a chance to bring in new viewers. People who sit down to the TV on Christmas night and turn on "something" might tune into Doctor Who and think "okay, maybe I'll tune in again when the series comes back on".

I just finished series 5 and watched the Christmas show from last year. It's a terrific show and last years Christmas episode had a lot of heart. I loved it! I haven't watched this years yet though so I can't judge.

Oh yeah, we need to see the real scary Mondasians again..

I never saw the original Cybermen as that scary until i saw this picture. Thanks, it's very good.

I don't have a problem with a weaker, plot wise, Christmas episode. They are meant to be more fun than anything. I mean really, killer spinning Christmas trees? Just not during the rest of the year please. The problem has been that the last few seasons have been REALLY weak and on the same level or worse than the Christmas episodes.

Let's look at the resolution of this last season. The Doctor convinces the universe he's dead. Problem: The Doctor is a time traveler, his foes generally aren't. So by definition, the foes could see the Doctor show up at any other point from his apparent time line. Also, up until the day he 'died' at the Lake Silencio, he's "alive" from a linear timeline stand point. How do any of his foes who have no time travel before that point get alerted to the fact he's dead? Even after that point, as a time traveler he's non linear from our perspective so CONTINUES to show up after that. They even demonstrate that in the first episode of the season by having his younger self show up AFTER he was killed. So the Doctor isn't "dead" even in any sense, he'll continue to show up in different points of time at any time, because he had over 100 years of travelling between that younger self and the one killed.

So the concept of him being considered dead by his foes is just ****ing stupid and poor writing.

Although not as bad this time, I've been finding the xmas specials terribly schmaltzy. I don't mean it has to be dark and heavy, but geez, get me my insulin. A big part of it is the music score--mixed too loud, as always, but this time they really poured it on. "You will get warm fuzzies...NOW!" Except not just now, but for 45 minutes straight.

And this from a guy who enjoys "Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas".

"You will get warm fuzzies...NOW!"

My usual reaction to subliminals like that is to dress in all black and write bad Goth Poetry on purpose...and this is from a guy who's friends accuse the 8th Doctor of having recast his warm, chirpy and energetic personality. :lol
