New BMF coming

Here's the job I did earlier in the thread

Wish I had got rid of the detail on the back now though.

Good job on the dish structure!!!

You're on time. Just remove the dish and sand the back detail. Add the new ones and it's OK! I would do it...

I think the mount is a REDO! :) Then again...the mount is the simplest part on the entire falcon..so if one was to make a new part...this is the part to do :)

Yeah I am hoping for that... I've slowed down to see what he makes :) I'd actually be fine if he remakes the entire falcon part by part now :)

I'm coming guys, I'm coming...

I will design the radar structure on the coming Christmas evenings, you know... :lol

I would love to see these 2 parts made. I'm not sure how many people would want to dig these out..but I would. Hopefully the pics are pretty clear on what parts I'm talking about.. Anyhow..My TONY-WISH-LIST :)

Yeah, probably
.....but its not as much fun,....and a lot more expensive:)

J
Actually I have all kinds of fun clicking on add to cart..plus I'm supporting TONY :) If someone makes a quality part, I think it's worth it. It's actually cheaper for me..since the way I would scratch build these parts would be to 3d model them, and 3d print them. I'm sure I'd mess it up and have to make 2 or 3 of them before I got it right. This way I know its right the 1st time. Win win.

As for saving money...that boat has already sailed my friend.

ShapeWays Parts : What is the best way to prep/paint/etc... I am new to these 3d parts and don't want to muck them up. They seem to ship with some sort of greasy goo...whats the recommended why to clean/prep/paint? Thanks...

Tron.

This is was I got from Shapeways and from my short experience cleaning 3D printed FUD parts:

--------------------------------------
How to clean the FUD parts?
In order to paint correctly the Frost Detail and Frost Ultra Detail parts, you need to clean them. The SLS printer uses wax as a support material, so you must eliminate all the wax.
You can use several solutions, or all together:
Use an ultrasonic bath, like the ones used by the jewellers.
Use a degreaser; soak the part thoroughly and rinse. You can repeat the process several times (make a test with an expendable part).
You can use a hair dryer to melt down the wax, but be careful to avoid melting the plastic too!!! Be careful. After that you can soak the part on a degreaser.
I’ve tested also using a contact cleaner spray, but I recommend doing a test with an expendable part.

Some people use 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean FUD or FD parts. They soak them for about a minute, gently go over them with a soft toothbrush, rinse them in the alcohol bath, and set them aside to dry.

Other solution that you can read on the Shapeways forum:
“To clean the parts I use a product called Bestine (chemical name heptane) to clean any wax off the surface of the material. The process turns the surface of FUD an opaque white. What is interesting is that it seems that in this condition, acrylic paint will adhere much better to FUD (as though it had been given a coat of primer paint). At the same time, it doesn't suffer from loss of detail created by a thick coat of paint.
Bestine is a noxious chemical and should be used only in a well ventilated environment. I have heard of other people who swear by Acetone, FurniturePolish, ultrasonic cleaners, dishwashing soap, and several other choices”.

More information:
Clean the parts thoroughly with dish washing liquid. Use warm water (max 70ºC/max 158ºF)). Let the parts soak for quite some time (3 – 6 hours). Meanwhile the water will turn cloudy. That’s the wax. Repeat this procedure if needed. In the end the kit won't feel greasy anymore and show an almost complete white colour. It is of utmost importance that the models are properly degreased – otherwise the paint will not stick! Small remainders can be removed with a swab or toothpick.
A better alternative is to use a hydrosonic cleaning machine. It is also possible to clean the models in acetone (max. 5 minutes). Please clean the model afterwards with water.
-----------------------------------------

I hope this helps

Thanks! I do have an ultrasonic bath thingy I might try...I've noticed so far, just taking them out of the plastic and letting them get some fresh air also gets some of the goo off.Since I got the shapeway parts this doesn't really apply to me..but wondering how much changing of the parts will be done for the resin versions? Reason being I see a lot of floating-ish tiny parts that look like they would not play nicely with a mold. Then again, I'm not the expert...just throwing it out there for the group. I'm assuming the shapeway parts will always just be a bit more detailed than the resin versions? (or maybe they will be the same...again..I'm not the master on that subject by any means)

Those parts look great! Tony must feel like a proud Papa seeing all these parts being used on peoples Falcon's. Anyone doing the Eps. VII dish?

I have received my first batch of the parts that i have started to clean and prep for molds and casting.

I will say that even in frosted ultra detail there will be some "grow" lines to contend with, needing sanding and polishing. That is even after the wax clean up. I think i spent about an hour and a half on just 1 sidewall of cleaning, so be prepared to put some time in. Luckily it's kind of sit in front of the TV with the kids type of work, so i can get it done without detracting from the usual work stuff i have to do.

These lines are no reflection on Tony's work of course, just the process.

You will not be able to fully see the extent of the "grow" lines until you get a little primer on the part, but be careful, only dust the part to see the lines or risk wiping out detail.

Luckily i have cleaned up parts like this before so i should be able to get them nice and crisply cleaned up to use as patterns for the resin castings.

Also, be careful with them, they are more fragile than resin, they don't really have much "give" where resin will bend a bit and is a bit forgiving in that respect, these will break easier.

Great news Mike.

Just so everybody is clear and on the same page, can you post what parts you will be casting and making available in the kit? Will you casting both round and rectangular radar dish for those wanting to do an Ep. VII?

Thnaks for your envolvement in this great toy!

Thanks, I would take it off but it's glued on with brass pins in for a little strength, I may still do it though :)

Almost everything except the cockpit interior and the turret wells stuff should be available in resin at some point, not sure about the square radar dish.

I will likely start a new thread at some point to separate out the resin upgrade kit from the stuff in this thread as there are multiple subjects being covered here.

Right now in hand i have all 6 sidewalls, the turret, radar dish, all the landing gear and the yoke.

Ultimately up to Tony, but the upgrade kit will likely be offered with per item prices (sidewalls/dish etc) and likely an "all in" option, hopefully with the all in option we can offer it at less than the sum of the individual parts
