Oooh, sign me up for Shapeways recessed components. I don't care how sharp the knife is, doing all the detailed cutting along the edges of the recessed parts is tedious and prone to cutting the carp out of ones self after a while.
On another sidebar I've been testing the flame/torch method for making paint stick on scrap pieces cut from the model and it works really well and is not hard to figure out how to do; at least for small areas. You can see the changes in the surface as you apply heat; and it doesn't take much. It kinda initially smooths out the surface and then does some kind of micro bubble outgassing before it actually distorts the material. The pieces I have tested the paint adheres as one would desire afterwards.
