New BMF coming

I just picked one up and I'm very impressed. Not sure how I'm going to approach it, but this thread sure provides inspiration! Great work!

I built up the mandibles from left over pieces of am old MPC kit and some plastic card.

Nice paint job so far lear60man but I have to ask will you be cutting this thing up, feet and canopy etc, because that's got to be harder painted?

Hey guys,

So i did the cockpit and gunner glass.Looks a bit messy and the plastic was a pain but ill clean it up today.

Had to show some pics of an idea for some cheap side panels. I had an old vintage MF sitting around and took a pair of snips to it. I dont think it looks too bad and there will be plenty to finish off all the walls. Dont worry, the falcon was missing top panel, cockpit etc so it wasnt being ripped apart for no reason. it was just sitting in my shed together with 4 vintage x wings. You can buy these panels on the Bay aswell :) Good alternative for a bubget build.

I think it looks ok, although im going to probably snip the gap off the middle and made it more continuous.

I noticed that fit as soon as I got the Hasbro out of the box. Here's what I did. Much cheaper than 3D parts. This is being built for my local hobby store and will hang a good 6' In the air. So, I rationalized that I could get away with MPC sidewalls. Thoughts?

Not sure if I am going to have glass in, the original shooting model never did.

If I do though, it will probably come from packaging material, such as the blister from an action figure.

If accuracy is not your goal, I see no problem with it. It looks good to me and 99.9% of the world will never know. You'll spend less time agonizing over the parts and be able to concentrate what can really make or break a Falcon build... The paint job.

When you are in this forum, it seems like everyone and their uncle is and expert on MF details. But the truth is that even if you narrow down the populace to just comic book going patrons, there would probably only be a fraction of a percent that would notice any detail issues. I bet you could put the radar dish on the other side an most those looking at it would not know it was incorrect.

Paint job looks great so far! Can't wait to get one myself.

For those who have one can I get some measurements of the cockpit cone. I need the external measurement of the cabin cone... Maximum and minimum diameter, length, etc.

The way I look at it, when the guys at ILM were tasked to make a smaller, easier to film Millennium Falcon, they used whatever parts they could get their hands on instead of trying to track down the exact parts used in the construction of th original 5 foot model in a smaller scale,....granted that the 32" model never stayed still long enough on screen for the viewer to register it was a different model......BUT....for them to get the right look,,,,no mater how many differences in greeblies

I couldn't agree more.

You need to take whatever approach gets your project finished,
with so many differences between the 32" and the 5', and them both being on this model any thing that is in the right "spirit" will look great :)
I doubt one person in a thousand will notice its not spot on.

Ill be honest here, i know mine will not be accurate, but id rather do this on a budget than spend s1000,s on a MR or similar. Stick a completed one of these inside a similar display etc and most people wont know the difference anyway. Im not overly fussed on 100% accuracy as its just a Hamburger anyway :)

Budget builds/self builds keep this hobby alive in many ways and its great to see it thriving in this day and age.

Was in the middle of making Chewie to go with the Han I made when my wife suddenly decided we were going out, didn't want to waste the rest of the milliput, so pressed it into one of the side wells, pressed an accessory from an action figure in it, and put in a piece of cocktail stick.

When it comes to detailing, this is how I roll.

Ok....so the wife is out of town for the weekend so what better time to start on the new BMF.

My achillies heel is I start on a project and get it 80% then shelve it. Thats why I like toy conversions so much, and this one is no different. I got home late last night and the primer was dry enough (2 days).

With out boring y'all, this is after 7 hours in the garage. Noting but a paint job. I did the panel gaps in a dark grey on top of the primer (airbrush) then a custom blend of a flat white with some tan and a touch of black. I totally cheated and used the existing sticker diagram for 'what colors go where' combined with online ref pics. I just started to do some dry brushing but im pooped for today. Its really cool to see how the colors change from light source to light source and direct light.

I hate you! You're way too good at painting, and are going to win this little contest...!

The great thing about the Falcon is that its weathered over time. Panels and parts were added over time so to repaint a panel fits into the overall look. But yea, the gear is going to go. I kinda just wanted to see how well it would look with just a paint job. I might just use the supplied stickers on the glass portions, Ill see how they look when applied. Im taking this in stages, Stage one, paint. Stage two, internal mounting point and fill with foam. Stage three.....Lights?

I might start a paint tutorial, including the colors I used if people are interested.

And thanks Rob, but im not done.....I only have $70 and 8 hours into this thing so far including the toy. I really want to finish it today or tomorrow but its hard to ignore the 85 degree weather.
