Chris. I really appreciate the info. This helps a lot. Thank you!

Is there a secret for cutting cleanly through polypropylene plastic? I read earlier in the thread dremels and sanding create ragged edges.

Many have said that heating it with a hair dryer before hand helps with the cutting.

Me, I just plow through it and fill-n-fix later. Maybe that's why it's taken me a year to get to where I'm at with mine.:lol

Yes, a dremel or heavy sandpaper will create a shredded edge. A small file will fix it up. Cutting with a hobby knife creates the best finish. As PoopaPapaPalps said heating it makes it easier to cut with a hobby knife. Like Budda!

I have to say I just use a nice new xacto knife and this thing cuts no problem. I took out the engine vent holes with just an xacto in about ten minutes total nice and clean. Gunners windows and landing gear was the same.

I never have understood the problem people are having.?????

Word...

Having finally.....FINALLY finished all the replacement panels and gone back over the whole ship to add all of the warts (oh dear god my eyes hurt now) I could identify from the ILM pics of the miniature on the mocon stand, I'm puzzling over a pair of features near the rear landing gear bays. On the vintage pics, there appear to be a symmetrically paired starboard and port panel, forward of the landing gear, just aft of the turret base (oh, and I JUST realized that for no readily explicable reason, Hasbro MIRRORED the damn turret base on the bottom side - WHY?!!! WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THAT? GAH!) bent down perpendicular to the hull at 90 degree angles, forming a pair of fins. Now, I don't recall them in any shots in Empire, they seem like they would be thin enough to be a major headache to create garbage mattes around and optically composite during some of the more acrobatic shots, and while you can clearly see where both used to be, they do not appear to ever have been on the miniature at any time it has been displayed. Does anyone have any idea if, like so much of the detail on the 32" they BOTH just happened to break off at some point after filming, or were they perhaps removed in '78-'79 by the model shop intentionally?

what is everyone using for their engine vents on the dorsal aspect. I know the shapeways has a set... so does starship modeler, but they are out of stock...
same question for the engine jets in the rear?

Are you talking about the grill over the vents or the machinery inside them or both?

All three options will be restocked, not to worry. Casting and cutting now. They keep going out of stock cause you guys keep buying them. :D

For those not in the know...

MMI-7781 - 1/48 MF PE Exhaust Grilles Detail Set (HASBRO)

MMI-7782 - 1/48 MF Clear Engine Detail Set (HASBRO)

MMI-7783 - 1/48 MF Egg-Crate Detail Set (HASBRO)

I had the Starship Modeler set and it was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Highly recommend just waiting for them to re-stock. Hoping to get another set to upgrade my second Hasbro 28" Falcon.

Small correction: They are by MMI (that's me), they are SOLD in the Starship Modeler store. Just sayin'.

Btw, thanks for the compliment. More FYI (OT); I have the same designs for the rear engine coming for the MPC/Ertl Falcon, as well as the Egg-Crate for the Fine Molds 1/72 Falcon.

There is also Randy Cooper's photoetch set also available from Paragrafix.

If you've got a BMF around the house somewhere, you've got a PERFECT master to cast from - the vents on the BMF are exactly identical in size to the HS vents, with even the rib spacing being right. Since it's all the same koolshade, it's also useful also for the upper vents on the docking arms. I cut out the existing flat vents and glued resin casts in from behind. Didn't worry about the fans underneath as, as far as I can tell, they're either not present at all, or just not visible on the 32" ship, which seems to be the closest to the HS.

They look great. How much would your parts be SirCharles77?

I can also vouch for the engine 'screens' that Tony R produces via Shapeways; I finally gave in and ordered a set & wow! Very fine detailing yet robust for such a tiny part... I also got his exhaust control 'actuators' and they too are incredible. May inspire me to a stupid level of 'renovation' on this thing...
Cheers!

Hi Jaitea,

The reference pictures you have uploaded are amazing! Any chance you could point me to the source of it? I know the topic of reference materials had been beaten to death but I am in need of more reference and just can't get what I am looking for. I greatly appreciate your help!

Gus

Just oust a quick word to say I have bought these parts from SirCharles77 and the build quality and fine detailed are superb! Included is a highly informative PDF file with plenty of pictures that shows you exactly where each piece goes. The whole thing has a professional look and feel to it.
