Re: New ANH & ESB Vader Cods- New pics 1st post

:thumbsup looks like you`ve almost cracked it looks wise. will you be staying with this or continue to look at other sources of leather ?

I think ill redo my cod next, but still want to source a more screen accurate lid

So the screen used cod was manufactured for the film? i always thought they had just used a period boxin cod

Nah, that's just a rumor started by Prowse.
Totally custom built for all three films.

Was it inspired by a boxer's cod? Maybe. Who knows. They certainly have a similar look.

Just to show what I meant about the illusion of glossy-ness on the anh cod.
Here is an outdoor pic of the film used anh suit. Clearly you can see it is just regular leather sheen, nothing special. It's the lighting that causes it to look shiny or dull.
The photo shoot you see in the Chronicles (and all the rest of the photos from that shoot) uses lighting that make ALL the leather parts look so glossy as if they were rubbed with vegetable oil. It's very misleading.

Agreed.
theres a good example of how the light effects the leather of the cod and costume on a whole in this old low Q tube vid. the studio lights are reflecting all over the place and it shows how light colours and refections in the costume itself will effect the image of how vader is percieved.

this outdoors shot compares well to ure cod

Well, this whole 'lighting and shine' brings up the issue of many people's
helmet and armour paint job's.

I've never, ever seen a completely accurate ANH paintjob by anyone yet.
people either go too glossy or too silver.

It also brings up the issue of do you want your replica to be 'screen accurate' (meaning how it appeared on the screen) or do you want it to be, what i would call 'on-set accurate' (meaning how the item actually looked before lighting, coloured gels, camera lenses and filters, negative printing, color correction, and finally digital or analogue video compression completely altered it).

I dont want to get too far off topic here this is Gino's show off thread, very nice work also btw...

But this is what im struggling with right now, there is a big difference between this criteria and i want my costume to look like what we see on screen but if you paint it how the prop was finished surely when photo'ed or at an event you will lookk right? Yes or no?? Guess it comes back down to the light wherever you are:wacko

First off Great Job Gino, much better then the first Photo's:)

fireblade: I think you have to deside what you want as far as looks go. I personally went for the look of Vader as he's seen on screen but if you want him to be 100% Accurate as Gino's Vader you'll have to do your Homework because the Colors and size of everything change because of lighting, Flash Photography, Ex. Ex. Either way yes I don't think the average person know's the exact Colors that Vader is but, in person I would imagine the original color sceme might seem a bit drab.

Even if some people wouldn't admit to it, I've always thought Gino's work has inspired a lot of people including Myself to work harder on making their Vader as close to screen accurate as possible and now with the release of these new Pics I can see everyone scratching threir Heads, brainstorming some ways to better improve their Vader :)
