New Airsoft PR On Evike

Ah sure its probably my terminology thats wrong but we are def thinking of the same part.

On my own PR the vents are open on the spas body as its a real spas cage (so I have no choice in the matter, but with the resin cast shotty inside it means you cant see straight through). I may be completely wrong (the PR experts will know more) but i believe the vents are open on the originals aswell (bar probably the stunt guns if they were just cast pieces). Either way its a great start piece as you say and will look great with some better paint.

I believe that the original spas cages were a very dark grey (some refer to it as anthracite). I painted mine straig
ht black to match the thompson, but had I been able to find a suitable dark grey, that's the route I would have gone.

If I ever come across a color I'm happy with, I'll repaint the cage and go with a flat black for the pump.

Right there with you - I have no idea if I'm using the right terms or not! In fact it was my 12-year-old that recognized (and reminded me of) the SPAS in there! He knew if from Call Of Duty!

Fred, on images of unmodified SPAS-12s, the body portion I refer to is lighter in color than the black pump / grip. It is more grey.

But in screen grabs it appears black. Understandably, dark set lighting can make grey look black, but the color is uniform with other parts of the PR that are indeed black (like the exposed portions of the tommy).

I'll try to post some of the grabs later today (umless someone beats me to it).

My two biggest gripes are the lack of a manual and that it does come with a battery and charger even though the site says it doesn't so I was like $30 buying accessories I didn't need. The rest of the rifle looks good and I don't really have that "creaky" noise or feel some were mentioning.

I'd be amazed if I missed the battery / charger in the packaging, but how were these packed? I found the mag and shot in a small separate box, but no sign of a battery charger or battery.

Pretty unprofessional handling on the whole battery issue by Evike if their website is misleading, and/or their delivery is inconsistent.

There is one of these selling on ebay right now for over $500. Ouch.

Selling? Or sold?

Evike still has them. Mine came from a batch delivered to Evike from the supplier last Friday, and their CR rep advised that batch caught them up on pre-orders.

A buyer would be a fool to pay that eBay price (or highly ill-informed).

Maybe I have mistook the "stick battery" for a mag?

I'm not an airsoft guy...

It comes with a stick battery and a charger. The charger is one where you just straight plug it into the wall and plug the battery into that.

What it doesn't tell you is how to put this battery in the gun. You have to pull out and twist the end cap of the grenade launcher which exposes the stick battery compartment. Put the battery in first and then connect the wires. The 9V is easy enough to figure out, it's in the ammo compartment. The button the extend the stock is right on the back end of the gun but it's a little hard to see.

The other thing that messed me up a bit is that to eject the clip there's a push lever under the Auto/Single selector switch that you push up to drop out the magazine.

Also, if you are like me and have never used one of these airsoft guns before trying to load the ammo took some time since it doesnt tell you how anywhere. The clip you fill with BBs has a pop up top that you need to flip open to drop in the BBs. Then you crank the wheel on the bottom of the clip to feed them up into the magazine.

The problem is relative coloring and contrast. Against a lighter, well lit background, the spas cage will appear lighter grey and in more contrast with the black pump grip. Take the same gun and place it against a dark, unlit background and all of a sudden, it looks like everything is a uniform black color. Under normal lighting conditions, the spas cage is dark grey and the pump grip is black. It's the same reason bess brown looks like olive drab, on film.

The battery should look like this.

The mag looks like the piece on the far right.

OK I am not mistaken... What I unboxed was the mag, then. Makes sense since it was in the same isolated box as the pellets.

How was the battery packed when you unboxed everything? Was it tucked away somewhere or otherwise deceptively packaged (I didn't notice the mag box at first)?

I haven't thrown anything out yet, but am pretty sure I haven't overlooked anything.

I'll be pissed if they screwed me on the battery...

My charger and battery were just in the box, not hiding away somewhere incognito but it couldn't hurt to check around your packing to make sure it didnt get wedged up in the cardboard somewhere.

If it turns out that you didn't get the battery or charger like you were supposed to let me know as I have a spare of each. I read the ad for the piece like it didn't come with a battery or charger so I ordered extra and wasn't able to return either. I can just send them out to you if you PM me your address etc.

Nope - not in there... I just double checked.

I think I'll take you up on your offer, and I'll make it up to you, too.

Just got mine today from the late March pre-order.
No stick battery or charger in my box either.
Looks like batteries are no longer included. :cry

Hey Rob,

Here's a photobucket account I found, showing pictures of an unmodified SPAS 12, that the guy took, at home Franchi spas 12 image by CTone03 on Photobucket

Pay attention to picture 3, which is a properly lit and exposed picture. It's probably a pro photo, but it is what the SPAS looked like from the factory (minus the rust :lol). If you look through his gallery, you'll see that the color of the gun changes from picture to picture, mostly based on the background and lighting.

Don't get me wrong, in the film, the spas looks to be black. But the bess brown looks to be olive drab, as well. Hell, I went OD and black on my build because that's how it looks on screen. I'm just saying, given the opportunity, I'd redo my cage with a really dark grey. I think there's something about it that adds a touch more of industrial realism, to it.

Cool Fred - thanks for the link.

So, when they built the original prop guns, (rememeber, I'm no PR expert), was the SPAS cage/body reversed, then? Appears the pump grip was cut down, and the cage inverted.

This is probably no-brainer stuff for the PR guys, but I've never paid too close attention to how the original went together.

And is it correct that the SPAS parts are ornamental only, covering a Remington shot gun?

Quite the hybrid prop...

Correct, the spas cage was cut down for length and mounted backwards. Then they cut an ejection port, so that it would line up with the ejection port of the 870. The pump handle was also cut down and re-mounted (backwards on the cage, but in it's original orientation - cage backwards, grip correct) and had an internal attachment made so that it could still operate the 870's pump mechanism.

The PR is indeed an engineering marvel, between the thompson, the 870 and the spas.
