New 52 Mr Freeze (New Photos pgs 1 & 6)

I am undertaking the project of creating the new 52 Mr Freeze suit, to be completed within the next 4-5 months in time for the dallas comic con. I am currently working on a cardboard skeleton to be a frame for fiberglassing later. (I will post pictures soon)

Below is pictures of what the new 52 Mr Freeze looks like.

Now for the questions and (hopefully) suggestions.

I want to recreate a look of smoke rising from his suit as shown in the comic. Would dry ice be the best idea or are there any other alternatives?

Also the dome will either be a large garden cloche or a custom oven-formed dome. In the comic there is a hexagonal texture in the dome and i want to somehow recreate that as well. Is there a type of film or sticker that I could put on the dome to create that look?

Edit:
Here is what It ended up as! DONT focus on the bad paint job, that will be fixed later...we were rushed.

Second Edit:
Here is a glamor shot that we took on the set of the film that we are making. Hope you all like.

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Aside from dry ice I cant think of anything that could be safe and smoke like that.
The sticker idea sounds good for the pattern on the dome.

If you can not find the proper decal you could use a thin masking tape or, peal-able latex and draw the pattern over the dome. Then spray a thin see through layer of pearl paint over the helmet? After you peal the tape, or latex off you would have the patter that you are looking for. Controlling how thin the paint would go on would be tricky. If you consider doing that you should test it first on something else.

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

As far as the hex pattern on the dome goes, I'd probably try to find some transparent/tinted film and cut each hexagon separately then apply them individually. It would take a while, but if you could find the correct shades of film, I think it would look pretty accurate.

I once saw a smoke machine that you were able to put under your clothes, it was very small. And by the touch of something very small in the palm of your hand you could release it. I saw this in an effects hardware store where they sold lights and amps and stuff mainly.

I have a relatively small fog machine, maybe i could get a portable power pack with an AC plug? Lol it'd take some work but anyone think that may work?

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

This build is going to be very cool! :cool
Seriously though, I look forward to seeing your progress.
Even if you can get some sort of anti-fog visor spray, I still would recommend putting in a few computer fans into the helmet. It's going to get pretty hot in there without it.

I love this design. Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

make a hex pattern/stencil and lay it over your glass/dome.. then use an 'air-eraser' (air-brush that use a grit/medium instead of paint) and 'etch' in the pattern.....

could leave a few hex areas open too to lightly 'fill' in a few areas..

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Anybody know someone with experience with oven forming plexiglas? I have a few questions about the dome, such as

Should I form it in two parts to prevent folding or warping?

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

If you are doing the hex thing, consider cutting out a few of he hexes to let some air flow in and out.

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Heres a picture of the cardboard "skeleton" that i will be using for the dome. It looks rough right now but after I bondo it up it will be more smooth.
I am going to have to enlarge it slightly because I realized how big my head is, so after that, it should be ready for bondo and oven forming over!

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze (Updates)

So now I expanded the dome shell to fit my head, and now I am going to have to wait for my paycheck so I can buy bondo and plexiglass to oven form!

Also since I have free time I decided to start a sculpt of a new 52 jim lee version of batman (as inspired by BatTexan (if you haven't seen his work..you should))

Below- cut dome in 4ths for expansion
Then its glued together
Also the rough sculpts.

I am not quite sure of it yet! I have looked at a lot of partial tutorials and it seems relatively simple. I will post my progress though.
