I'm sorry you thought of it that way. I agree, the outer ship CG could have been better, but it was way more interesting and realistic than most space based movies I've seen since whenever. No forced 'love story' that every movie seems doomed to have or villians just cause situations, just people who would be in that role and what may happen

Reclaiming the Blade - A fantastic documentary about medieval swords and swordsmanship and how both are preserved in the present day.
The Call of Cthulhu - A 2005 independent movie that's a really good adaptation of the original story, and is filmed as a black-and-white silent movie to make it look like it was made in the 1920's.
Cadfael - About a medieval monk who solves crimes using his knowledge of science and logic. Sounds silly, but it's really good.
Serial Experiments Lain - DVD only for now. I'm half way through this right now and it is absolutely fantastic. About a middle school girl that gets caught up in weird hacking conspiracy. At least, I think that's what it's about. It's pretty esoteric, but I'm loving it.
Gasaraki - Also DVD only. Fairly realistic mecha series set in the near future, but with mysticism mixed in to make things interesting.

A few I have enjoyed recently
Movie: New Version of Red dawn was just put on Netflix, decent story and remake of the classic. A pretty good 90 minute "shoot em up" if you are into action films something definitely worth watching at least once, and I mean it is on instant Q so no having to wait for it in the mail and send it back.
TV show: Continium This show is one of my new favorites pretty good future meets the past. Story is very well done but a little complex, also a pretty good mix of action and emotion.

I too thought the new Red Dawn was fairly well done... much better than I expected, although the two brothers sure didn't look like brothers at all.
I watch a LOT of movies on Netflix, especially low budget films and I find maybe 1 out of 25-30 are even worth watching, but ever now and then you do find a gem, and it is almost always one that I have resisted for some reason or other. The cover photo (as well as the title) for Scenic Route turned me away, but I finally got around to watching it and actually thought it was one of the better low budget movies I have seen in a while! Okay, I know how much Hollywood has been overdoing the found-footage genre, but I just watched one on Netflix that was not too bad. I would classify it as squarely between mediocre and good as far as quality is concerned.
The Dinosaur Project (2012) - IMDb
I like how they took an established real world legend and expanded on it without going too far into explanations and expository dialogue, as these types of films are wont to do. Too often we get found footage movies where somehow the characters come across someone who knows everything about the aliens/legend/curse, etc, or the characters make wild leaps of intuitive logic that no average person would normally come up with in that scenario. No this one provided information through the guide, but only as much information as would be feasible for her to know. It left me wanting to know more about the place and how it fit into local history and storytelling, and in my opinion, you can't ask anything else from a movie.
The special effects were a little weak in one point, but CGI in a nighttime setting with a minimal budget will always produce less than stellar results.
I'd give this a 6.5/10

Grabbers. But they only spend the last 1/3 or 1/4 getting drunk.
Lunopolis. I was expecting this to be really bad so maybe it just seemed good because of that. Totally ignore the synopsis on Netflix, it is way off base. This was a conspiracy movie that includes time travel and a Scientology type group. The bad news is that it is another "found footage" movie, but not too badly done. There was a point in the middle where it basically turned into a History channel special without the guy with the hair.
