Nerf Gun Props? YES!

starting on one today, i sanded off the nerf logo & warning labels. next ill be needing to dismantle it to start on the sanding primer and paint, but i cant find the correct size screw driver :/

Actually, I had a problem with that as well (for certain screw holes). I ended up buying a cheap dollar store 3/16" (.187") driver, and turning down the diameter to .165" for the first 1" of the shaft (just used a belt sander and a steady hand). Or you could just buy a 5/32" (.156") driver (if you can find one), but it will probably cost you more than $1.

Also, here's something I finished last week (removed the AR, and added an o-ring and a custom brass barrel)
TL-reflex_socom_mini.jpg

I didn't do any detailing yet, as I just wanted to get it "serviceable". Shoots level 30-40' (better if shooting from upstairs), and easily arcs 60'.

first coat of black not going for anything fancy some flat silver accents.... ill be looking into the wonder of masking taped and how accurate i can get to the ideas in my head

So glad to see everyone posting their stuff on here and sharing ideas on design elements. I love that little nerf pistol with the silencer style barrel. Very cool indeed :) I'll have more to post up soon, just been extremely busy with orders and life in general, so you guys keep posting and I'll get some stuph up soon!

Here's another entry from our maverick competition:

Unfortunately it's looking like most of the competitors have dropped out. They still have 2 days to do the minimum required so hopefully some of them get off their butts...:unsure

Let me guess... You call that The Big Mac version of the PDK from Blade Runner?

I might be having some issues, and need advice.

I'm working on a clear Maverick today, and I'm using Krylon white primer. I took the maverick apart, soaked all the parts in porple power for an hour, rinsed them well, and dried them outside. its quite sunny, and probably 80 degrees.

The can says to wait 10 minutes to dry, but I waited a half hour.

I then covered the parts in krylon paint (not wanting to have an issues mixing brands)The primer seems to almost be like flour on some of the parts, and in some places it is not sticking and just comes off on my hand, along with the paint!

Has anyone ever had issues with krylon white primer on this type of plastic?

I'm not quite sure what I can do to salvage this mess... I'm leting the paint cure longer, so see if maybe that seals it somewhat.

The plan was to take a clear green maverick, paint the orange innards flourescent green, and add lights as a green lantern cosplay prop.

I've never had issues with primer ever before, but wanted to make sure that the paint stuck to the plastic.

I suppose if the paint job goes south I can soak everything in brake fluid to remove the paint, and try again.

Impatiently waiting....

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new here and just finished reading through this entire thread and I have to say that there is some pretty awesome nerf mods and repaints on here! I have been contacted by a guy not long ago who wanted me to modify and repaint a buzz bee double shot nerf-style shotgun (photo here --> http://tinyurl.com/3r6r86s ). I finished the thing yesterday and wnted to share it with you, here it is. It was inspired by the boomstick form army of darkness :p

I used a dremel with a little grinder wheel to carve the plastic just a bit to simulate the texture of wood, it's the paint-job that really make it stand out ;)

Excellent job on that wood simulation!

Question, guys. When working on nerf mods, do you always worry about retaining functionality, or do you in some cases abandon that for form?

I'm thinking it would be better for my mods to gut any working innards, and just go with additional lighting instead.

All depends on what you want the gun for, shooting or show?
Most of my mods can not fuction because of the extensive modding.

Hmm, that sucks, never had that problem before...it sounds like you didn't get all the bath off or something. Was it a humid day? Humidity can mess with primer and paints. I use Rustoleum brand paints myself and have not had an issue with them.

Very cool gun and also very happy to have you share in here, thanks! ;)

I also have not run into this, except with clearcoats sometimes wanting to "blush" which is to say turn a milky white color. That has to do with fast temp changes, wind and also humidity. Everything I have here in Florida on a consistant basis ;) I'd also say it reacted with the chemicals you sprayed on. It's possible the stuff is still on the surface of the plastic so you might just bite the bullet and sand down the gun surface properly and then try the paint again in a small area and see what happens. The primer should not act like that unless it's really old or wasn't shook for the two minutes they suggest. It really does help, as does keeping the paint "warm". the paint lays on the surface better.

Good luck and don't give up hope. Worse case is you have a paint mule to try out new colors on when you don't want to mess up on a 30-50.00 gun :)

Yeah it was more humid, than I prefer, but I am pretty sure the bath chemicals were washed off. I always do a number of rinses in very warm water until everything looks right, and you no longer get that cleaner bubbling in the water.

I used my dremel wire brush to remove the paint from the trigger, and then just repainted it without primer, and that seems to be what I should have done originally. It took more coats to get the solid color, but thats much better than that bubbling. Honestly, it almost looked like I was spraying foam on some parts!

Since my main use for the guns is lit up as green lantern props, I think I'll remove any parts that don't change the gun's appearance, and then just paint the remaining solid parts flourescent green. I'll have room for an additional light source as well if I follow this path.

BTW, OOPS! was great at removing the paint on the gun!

This entire thread has me drooling. I spent the past couple hours scanning through the thread.

A question for those who mod the Stampede: The magazine is removable, right? I'm pretty sure it's identical to one I need for a costume, but the huge magazine drives me up a wall, and is not SA.

It's not even a mod to remove the mag :) It slides right out to replace it with others, the smaller 6 slot mags fit fine as so the drums from other blasters.

Thanks, Crimson Prime. There's no magazine (or drum) in the gun I'm trying to work on. Just solid. It helps that it doesn't need extreme disassembling. I've fiddled with the Maverick before, and it takes a lot more work to disassemble that.

I've repainted a couple of flintlocks, Nerf guns, etc, but nothing to the skill of the rest of y'all.
