Need some opinions on a SW idea...

Okay so I've been here awhile and I wanted to get my post count up and figger out my living quarters (I'm getting ready to move) so I should have a place to make things and I want to do various bits which include making movie related stuff but with a twist.......

Here's my idea,I'm pretty sure it'll work but before I do it I want to see if there's any interest in it so I can make a little cash off of it (hey I want to do my hobby not just for fun but profit) the idea is simple:make a lightsaber dueling sword/rapier,I figger it shouldn't be hard to take a good,all-metal lightsaber replica and affix a competition rapier blade to it,also looking into coloring the blades in some way,I also think LFL will leave me alone if I just mod pre-made replicas.

Now even though these will have a blunt tip you'd still need to wear the gear before you start a poking Jedi Vs. Sith match, still it might be fun to get a few people together for a match in SW themed gear....and I intend to make real knives so I suppose if one wanted I could attach a real live blade to a lightsaber replica.

So what sayeth the forum? sound like a cool idea?

...I also think LFL will leave me alone if I just mod pre-made replicas.
If you're planning to do this as a one-off for your own personal use, LFL won't touch you. But if you're planning to modify several pre-made replicas and sell them, LFL (and probably the manufacturer of the pre-made replicas you use as well) will definitely come after you if they find out.

The idea itself is interesting, though you would probably have to repaint the blade after each duel; I can't imagine there are too many paints out there that would endure that kind of blade-on-blade abuse. Powder coating might fare better, but would obviously be a much more expensive process.

The last thing most Star Wars fans need is a sharp (or even blunt) stick in their hands.

If lightsabers were real there'd be lots of fans with no arms and legs.

Bad idea.

your better off making a carbonfiber rod with a plastic outer so you can spray it with plastic dye spray paint. it absorbs into plastic so the plastic BECOMES the color.

Sword fighting re-enacters and classical fencers have years of training under their belt. Plus they tend to be ren-fair types, not SW fans. If you start selling lightsaber hilts with real blades (blunt *OR* sharp), you'll be attracting the inexperienced fanboys, not the pros, and somebody WILL end up without an eye or worse.

I say bad idea.

Kind of OT, but a few years ago I was directing a show that included some medieval re-enactors. When we were setting up for the segment, one of the guys came out all armored up, but on crutches...with one leg. Now they were supposed to fight with maces and swords and what-not, so I was kinda like "Prepare to abandon the segment if need be", and warned the talent/crew.

The segment went on longer than timed because it was insanely awesome. Never EVER underestimate a man, one legged or two, with a mace!

@ Oujala, lol, that's awesome
@ Krull, I agree with the others, It's a bad idea, you'd be facing an insane amount of lawsuits if anyone got hurt. If you really want to, just make replicas that can have a blade put on, don't actually put them on. Now if you want to make twists on lightsabers and SW stuff, try steam punking, etc. But as others said, bad idea to give a bunch of people that are middle aged or younger with short attention spans something they can stab or cut themselves with. If you can make metal lightsaber replicas though, you can make some money off that. I for one am still looking for a Starkiller lightsaber from the first game that doesn't cost $200.
