Hi everyone it's Kat. This is my first thread here and I would like to share with you a recent project of mine - the "NASA tool box". It is a storage box for my slides collection and all the tools, and is kind of a replica of Adam Savage's microscope box from below video:
The whole project started with my collection of 60-70s scenery slide sets. I also built a simple light box for viewing the slides, with EL film powered with USB.
It was after building the light box when I realized that a box to store the light box and the slides would be great, and I thought of Adam's really nice microscope box. I was out of plywood during the build, so my box was built from two old wine crates which have been lying around my shop for a long time.
The build of the interior is rather simple as I just need to build specific holder for each tools:
Here is one of the fun part of this build. I printed out some old NASA labels that I found online , and I also made up my own one. I printed them on sticker paper, and soaked them in coffee to weather them. I was happy with the result. I also ordered those engraved plastic plates online and did the labels with an embossing labelmaker.
I bought a cheap lock for the box too and decided to make a key out of brass. The shank was easy as I just soldered the two tiny bits to a brass tube.
I figured that a knurled head seems to be perfect for the design as it reminds me of the NASA Apollo torch, however I do not have a lathe so I held it in some kind of drill chuck and knurl it on a drill...probably the world's worst knurling ever.
As a finishing touch to this build I drew and made this tiny user manual, based on the look of the Apollo 13 manual:
So this is my build / replica of NASA tool box, inspired by Adam Savage. Hope you guys enjoy it!
