NASA Advance crew escape suit build

So, i've recently been thinking about a costume or prop to build and came up with the idea to build a budget, yet still accurate as can be, space shuttle suit a.k.a ACES.
The suit was used from STS-64 up until the final flight, STS-135 in 2011. It was designed to replace the LES, launch entry suit. I decided to build this suit because for a beginners project, it seems relatively simple compared to the Apollo 11 EVA suit, which i would hope to build in the future. so to begin with the basic orange suit, i am going to use an orange flight suit, made for the Rebel x wing pilot as it seems to be very similar and the pockets are located in the right positions. The next part, correct me please, i dont know the proper name, the helmet pull down strap, will be made out of a webbing type material similar to the material found on the WW2 us para webbing. Next, for the two ports down near the mid-chest region, the right one will be made out of a piece of pvc plumbing, will a wall mount which is perfect. and for the left one, i will mold it out with clay. so thats what i have come up with to start with, so that should be the next months project. and finally, remember, i am looking t build this on a budget, yet making it as accurate as possible. Any advice or help would be extremely appreciated. more updates to come.

Oh good... It's nice to see another RPF'r bitten by the "Pumpkin Suit" bug! I thought it would be simple also. But as you get into it, its pretty complicated. My approach is using "COTS" (commericial off the shelf) parts and materials, as finances allow. Good ACES suits are hard to come by so 1) "Science the ****** out of this". Gather as much good info as possible both written and photographic. 2) My sewing skills are minimumal so get a back up person to help out in that area. 3) Get up a list of suppliers for hard to find items, so you can budget for the expense. 4) Break things down into sub-assemblies (easier to work with that way). A good reference for the ACES costume is the build by "Teacher in Space". A good resource for webbing and parts is "Strapworks.com" lots of stuff to look at, their pricing is reasonable as well.

Good luck an keep us posted,
Chuck
