Naked Snake/ Big Boss MGS 3 and Solid Snake MGS 1 simultaneous build (DONE)

I have decided to bring 2 characters from my favorite game series to life, Naked Snake/ Big Boss and Solid snake from MGS 3 and MGS 1 respectively. I have about a month to complete them as I want to wear them to Wizard World Chicago

I will be taking a lot of inspiration from one of my favorite cosplayers Rick Boer who has done some amazing work with both Snakes.

I've made a bit of progress on Naked Snake.
For the headband I took a olive green Tshirt and used a foam insert to bring out the eyebrow like details to make it look like a I'm scowling.

I also had my lovely girlfriend contour my face to make me look more like snake, here is a before and after.

and here is the eye patch made of foam with the wig on and without the makeup.

The wig still needs styled and the headband needs to be weathered a bit more but I'm happy with the result so far, as my beard grows to the length I want I'll practice the makeup again.
For the Stabo harness I bought a decommissioned parachute harness that had all the necessary clips and straps.

I cut everything off, gave it a good cleaning and sewed the harness together like so

It still needs to be fitted with the belt but I'm happy with it so far.
For the belt I bought the pouches online at various surplus stores, I then weathered the pouches with black shoe polish. The knife was make of wood, fiberglass and covered in foam and the pants were bought locally and tailored to fit me. the gloves were bought online and the fingers cut off to resemble snakes

As for Solid Snake I have bought the fabric to make the under suit and the vest and will post progress pictures when I can!

Foam inlay for the bandana is a great idea. It's like, you put it on, bam ! Instant metal gear look. Good luck finishing the build in time, boss.

I made some progress today!
I put an old antenna in the radio pouch.

I made the chest knife and holster the same way as the boot knife, here it is before and after weathering.

and here is the switch box. Its made of foam and the actual switch is held on with a brass brad so it can actually swivel!

I need to attach the cord for the throat mic and then Velcro the switch box and knife on the harness!
I'm currently working on his knee pad as well, it should be done tonight!
For Solid Snake, I found some denim fabric that had a good texture and am currently dyeing it for the under suit.

Here is everything so far on Naked Snake, I have been hitting the gym pretty hard and cutting my diet and I have about 3 weeks to lose a bit more fat to make this costume look great.
Next weekend I'm going to trim up my beard and do one last makeup test before the con, I'll make sure to get some good pictures of the costume then!

I'm going to dye the under suit for Solid Snake today, I've also made some good process on the vest and knee pads and I ordered all the utility pouches.

Solid Snake Progress!
I started with the under suit, it was a dark denim that I bleached white and then dyed gray. it took about 10 bleach baths and 2 times in the dye.

Then I got started on the vest, here is concept that I sketched up.

I then made a standard vest pattern and enough for 2 vests so I can sew them together and then flip inside out to get rid of the seams.

Before flipping I glued foam into place where I wanted the armor details

Then I flipped and stitched in between the foam to bring out the details. Then I added a zipper, zipper flap, shoulder pads and a collar all with foam inserts.

and after making the shoulder straps I took one more picture with the vest and headband on before I fell asleep.

I still need to make the hip pads and sew them on the vest but I'm very happy with it so far!
Today I'm getting started on the knee and elbow pads.

I finished up Solids headband using the same method as described above.

I also weathered the vest by dry brushing grey acrylic around the edges.

Now the vest looks like its been through the harsh snowy weather of Shadow Moses Island!

Glad to see more MGS builds here as I'm doing Skull Face from MGS5.

Solid Snake progress!
Finished up the gloves and elbow pads.
First I made a pattern and cut/ layered foam, plastidiped it and then painted it a light grey.

Then I weathered it.

And glued the knuckle pad on the glove and the elbow bad on a black sleeve made the same way as the knee pad for Naked Snake, here is what it looked like along with the repainted gun.

And here is everything from the waist up.

i should be getting the pouches in the mail this weekend and when I do I'll post more updates!

Haha that is certainty an idea! I'm thinking my next MGS cosplay might be Solid from MGS2 or Cyborg Ninja from MGS1 and I'm really trying to get my girlfriend to cosplay as The Boss from MGS3.

as for the progress I finished the knee pads.

I'll be getting the utility belt and pouches tomorrow!

This is turning out pretty dang rad! I really like the foam sandwich for the vest.
What glue did you use on the foam to attach it to the fabric?
This is reminding me I still need to finish out my Venom Snake.

Finished up placing the pouches on the utility belt and sewing the crotch straps into place. I weathered the pouches with grey acrylic and the buckles with silver acrylic.

I'll be practicing the makeup and trying on both costumes tonight!
