Now that the episode has aired my NDA no longer applies.
Back in early October our local 501st Garrison was contacted by mythbusters for a shoot. The problem was that it was in a few days and they asked for forty stormtroopers. On a Friday.
They also had a shoot Saturday, and asked for about half that number.
Calls were quickly made to our neighboring garrison for more costumes.
Eventually after, oh say, ten or twelve people signed up the call was expanded to sandtroopers and scout troopers. That got the numbers up.
Since I couldn't show up Friday I only know they did some marching scenes, that promo with Adam talking about the 501st, and so forth.
On Saturday we had about 16 costumes, ten Golden Gate Garrison members and 6 from the Central California Garrison. We were shown to a building where we could sit and change, eat snacks, drink. We signed NDA's, had our mug shots taken, the usual for a shoot. Then we waited a bit.
An hour later the Director, Adam, and Jamie appeared to say hi, let us know what was going to happen, and of course say that safety was of paramount importance. At that moment I began hoping for explosions, but it was not to be.
And then we waited, Hollywood style. Very typical of a shoot. Lots of waiting. Eventually we got bored but also nervous with not being in costume and we put on the majority of our suits. We figured someone would come racing in and say, quick, now!
Lunch came, we ate inside our building. Outside at some tables the mythbusters crew ate theirs. The weather was great. We kept finding ways to entertain ourselves. Passing cars (not much traffic on the old military base) were subject to droid searches. One fellow had a mouse droid he drove around. Mostly we talked and waited.
Eventually we were ushered into the main building. They looked us over, divided us into groups for certain shots, and off we went. The first thing filmed was Sophia's entrance. Except we had no idea who this girl was. We walked her down a couple of times, trying to hit the marks you can't possibly see in a bucket.
Eventually they had it the shots they wanted and .......and.....more waiting. Jamie had to go change.
That took quite a while. Finally announced as ready, we got into a horseshoe shape and out comes Jamie. We weren't shooting yet, his costume was great, I clapped. And was joined in by everyone else.
Jamie turned and gave us his death stare.
We stood there for some more dialogue and soon Jamie and Sophia go to get their safety harnesses.
That means more waiting. One group did practice moving the safety mattresses into position. One of the scouts had to go to the bathroom and of course at that very moment is when they want to film it. The director says quick, someone, anyone. I grabbed a corner and they start filming. I was not watching the practice run, I had no idea what the mark was and of course I'm in the front. I plopped it down on the masking tape. Perfect. Only it is the wrong mark. That was leftover tape. That's okay, we'll do it again, right? Nope. One take only. I wonder how that will look, I think. Thankfully, it didn't appear in the show.
Back to the other building for more waiting. That's when we figured out who Sophia was. Someone had recognized her.
Time goes by, it's probably around three, and back we go. Now it's swing time. Jamie and Sophia get the balance and weight distribution on the harness dealt with, and we are sent throughout the building. Some on the ground, some on the second level. I end up right next to the landing spot on the second level. A crewman hands me a black painted nerf gun. When they swing, he says, shoot them.
Um, I think not, I'll send some darts PAST them hopefully in camera range, but I'm not popping either of them in the face by accident.
They film the swing a few times, Adam grabs them when they land and he turns and says 'bite me evil empire' or whatever he says, I shoot him. Every take. I doubt he felt it, but I thought it humorous. You can see me aim at him when he says it, but they cut away before I shoot.
I picked up and kept one of the darts when filming ended. Just because.
That swing looked fun. I would have happily paid to give it a go.
Then we filmed inserts, troopers shooting, reacting, that sort of thing.
Then the wrap up, the plausible or busted scene. We lined up behind the camera, they do their lines and we chase them down the building. After a couple of takes we are laughing because the Tupperware rubbing sound on that many running people echoing throughout the building was too much to take. We watched the replay on the camera, it looked great, and we were done.
We posed for group pictures for a few minutes, they thanked us and off we went.
