I am posting this in response to tvpastcom's post since I think it would be unfair for me to derail their Thread...

I can show you one of the Best Omni Replicas because I own it!

I won't be posting more photos since this is a one-of-a-kind and the original Machinist won't ever make another (Yes I already asked him!), although I may show it off at a Prop-Party someday... :)

This is the first time I've posted detailed Photos of my Omni and I'm trusting RPF members to keep it on the RPF and ask that nobody post the Photos elsewhere...

So I can say from experience... making an accurate Voyagers Omni isn't as easy as it may seem, it took me a long time to get all the details correct and spot-on accurate, the Font is correct and to-this-date nobody has done it correctly, I personally did all of the Artwork for the Dials, and Drove all over Southern California looking until I found the Right company that was up to the challenge to replicate the Dials in such a small scale and out of thin Brass Metal! Many companies immediately Said NOWAY!!
The Omni did cost a Pretty Penny but it was worth EVERY CENT!!

And No there are not any Electronics yet so you won't see a Red or Green light inside of the Windows where they should be located...

For the Record, the Machinist who wishes to remain nameless... did everything on the Omni with the exception of:
  • The Lid made by another Talented Metalworker.
  • The Dials Created by me and Etched by another company.
  • The Various Globes in the Center ...
(I sculpted each one from each episode where the Globe Changed)
  • The Magnifier Frame (After a lot of Trial and Error... I did it myself).
The Omni did cost quite a bit, Great Quality work is, but it was worth EVERY CENT!!

Bravo! Very nice piece. What's known about the original though? I would think that there would be a few out there, but it seems like a lot of effort went in to build this piece for a TV show.

I remember loving to watch these shows. Haven't seen any since the original so, not sure how well they hold up today.

Good question I wonder what happened to it, someone must know out there.

I was thinking the same thing after reading this thread. considering the caliber(sp?) of props from shows of the same era that were much more successfull you kinda get the impession the show was created around the omni. I mean hell, lightsabers are flashtubes with windshield wipers.

Were the omni's main components some kind of ultra rare found object?

No CNC machines (I don't think) in the eightys.

This could be more fascinating than the recently found Trek TOS communicator.

I can tell you what I do know about the original Omni...

  • Only 3 Omni's were made from what I heard from someone who asked James Parriott directly and he still has one of the Original Omni Props in his possession.
  • According to someone who spoke to Meeno Peluce the original Omni cost was about $3,500.00 and that was in the 1980's to have it custom Machined!
  • The Omni was 100% Custom Machined, no found parts were used.
  • The Lid of the Omni was custom made then the Details of the "V" in the center was carefully hammered into the Lid as well as the Lettering for "Time waits for no Man".
  • All of the Omni sounds were added later after filming the Episodes, the prop only had a Solid Green Light and a Blinking Red Light, no sound.
If I remember anything else I'll post it here...

Not sure if there were only 3 made, but 1 of my best friends who's a TV producer here in LA has an original that he bought back in the 80's from a prop house in NY (paid a MINT). The above sounds correct, except I remember his piece having sound, but I could be wrong.

I'll get more info, etc when he gets back into town on Tues.

*ss*

I have a real problem with this thread.

It needs more (and bigger) pictures. :love

NC dates back to the 40's and 50's. In NC machining, you had to create a punch tape to feed in to the machine to run the program. No computers, just a long tape. CNC machining uses a computer to feed the input to the machine. I have a 1978 Bridgeport Mill that used to be a NC tape feed machine but now has been upgraded to a CNC machine. I don't remember the exact year, but I belive the first CNC machines debuted in the 70's.

Edit: Forgot to mention that this is one of my 'holy grail' props and I am hoping to do some work on one for myself after I pick up the DVD set.

You are correct. My dad was a machinist from the early 60s thru the early 80s and he did NC up to the very first iterations of CNC (mid-70s). I have a picture of him next to one of the first CNC mills, the thing is the size of a semi-trailer. If I can fix my scanner, I'll show you guys.

It's a very interesting thread - what's the Omni? Who posses it? What can it do? What are the dials for? Is it a compass?

I don't think I have seen the series in germany, so pardon for those questions.

And yes, it'll be nice to see some close-up photos.

Here's a link to all your answers and a detailed Pic of the Real TV Show Prop:

I have wanted an Omni since watching the show back in 1982, as someone else stated, it is my holy grail of props. I remember drooling over the one the Sci-Fi prop guy made years ago, and then the Replica Props one. Both were pretty cool, but neither was totally accurate. I still desperately want one though. (I would love to hang it off the belt of my pirate costume, and see if anyone notices ;))

Yours looks pretty sweet, and I'm very jealous! Would love to see more/bigger pics of it.

Thanks, I may show it off sometime at a Prop-Party in the Future as I said earlier, I just don't want too many photos of My Omni floating around since it's so rare...

And it's My Holy Grail also!!

As a Kid my Grandmother Contacted one of the Prop department heads at Universal and they ALMOST gave me Blueprints until someone at the TOP heard about my request and then they said NO Unfortunately!
:cry
