Yep, FINALLY getting back to this! (Slacker!! ;) )

Started the primer and cleanup phase... Some minor issues to address then on to the clear dome!

Excellent work! I agree, Youve nailed down all the subtleties, many people miss when doing xenomorph concepts. Fantastic!

Just found this thread. Great concept, and awesome work so far. Can't wait to see this finished.

Just don't make it so realistic that it loses it cuteness.

Re: My take on the Alien as a toddler! UPDATED 4/28

Thanks for the kind words, guys!! Just to clarify, it's not that I'm actually going for a "cute" alien toddler, more what it might have actually looked like in a juvenile form... Like having a bit of an oversized head in comparison to the body, "baby teeth", larger eye sockets... things like that. My end game is to have it displayed under a glass dome kind like a "collected specimen"....

I'm still working on the cleanup on the head then I plan to mold it to start work on the "buck" for the vacuuformed clear dome.

Stay tuned!

I like it. You should have a Jonesy the orange cat holding this badass critter by the tail or better still by the neck. Even as a toddler, they would be so nasty.:p
....although Jonesy the cat wouldn't last long with acid all over the place.

I'm sure we have discussed this before, but to make a nice big dome, I'd going to suggest (unless you have a commercial vacuum form machine) to do this either as a slump form or vacuum assisted slump.

Slump form is easy. You make a jig with a cutout to the exact size (externally) that you want the dome, then heat the plastic and let gravity take over. Once the plastic reaches a critical temperature, it will slump and form a beautiful dome with NO STRESS lines. You will need screw the plastic down to keep it flat around the rim.

Vacuum assisted adds suction to the mix, so you need to build a box bigger enough to hold the jig and again, wait for the plastic to slump, and hit the vacuum, It will help pull the dome and should give you even better vertical sides.

Pulling plastic over a buck works, but requires a BIG vacuum table with much more heat and a perfect seal to make it work. Especially at the height this will need to be.

This slump/vacuum assisted slump method will also allow you to use thicker plastic - up to 6mm clear Perspex.

That's a great idea, thanks for sharing that! I was planning to use a traditional buck to vaccuform the dome but this sounds like a better way for sure... and I know exactly what you're talking about on how to do this. I'm looking forward to trying it!

I hope to have the final cleanup on the head completed tonight and have started roughing in the body as well... Stay tuned!

Thanks again!

I just found this thread right now. BRILLIANT work, Beeb89.

You managed a perfect balance between fascinating and deeply unsettling. I'd say you've achieved the "in-between" state you've set out to achieve.

Keep up the good work. And keep sharing those photos.

Ted.

A little more progress on the Alien toddler... Quick trash mold to cast the top part of the head to start sculpting the dome! I've been looking forward to getting on this part for a while...

Did you use a silicone putty for this?

I did indeed! A quick fix for what knew only needed to be a decent cast.

I had a chance to start working on the dome this past weekend. Got half roughed in so far...

Getting close! I'm thinking of doing this as just a bust with partial chest and back detail added with a cool base. Thoughts??

More to come!
