Hell all!

Just wanted to post some pics of a chair I made. It is not from a movie but I just wanted to show it off :) The chair is made from foam and then fiberglassed. I textured it to look like it was carved from stone.

very cool- I love your work...

Can I ask you a question ? I wanted to do something like this in largescale but don't know what kind of foam to use ...could I simply get the stuff from Home Depot or do I have to go to somewhere special for it ?

The foam I use is the white kind with the beads. There is a local company that sells huge pieces, up to 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet. The only draw back is that they only ship around VA. and also NC and PA. They don't ship anywhere else. You could use the home depot foam and just glue the sheets together maybe?

I like the throne idea! I had started one like that however the thing was going to be huge! I wanted something that could be used in an office or set up in a corner of someone's house :)

The more I look, the more intrigued I am. What tools did you use for sculpting the piece ? Also, what I was going to do was sculpt out, then brush on some good ol' quick cast resin for a surface and go to town to smooth it out. What are your thoughts ? And thank you for answering my newb questions.

I used my home made hot wire tool ( most store bought ones are hand held tools but are too small so I made one that is 3 feet wide by 2 feet deep) I used 2 patterns to make the profile of the chair and then patterns to make the front shape of the skull. I actually made the skull out of thin 3/4 inch foam and just hand carved it with a wood rasp. I also used my wood rasp to make the cuts in the sides of it. I was going for a very primitive look like it was carved a couple of hundred years ago so I stayed "light" on the details:)

After that I attached the skull to the main part of the chair and then the fun started :) I fiberglassed over the foam to make the surface tough. I applied stone texture paint over that. After that I used a product called sculpt or coat and applied it with a putty knife to make the rough finish. I then applied about 6 layers of different paint to make all of the subtle colors in the chair even though the pics do not show them off that well.

Hope that answered most of your questions :)

More than you reazlie ! Thank you very much. Now I just have to do some research on how to make one of these hotwire tools !

The hotwire I made I use a battery charger and a PVC pipe frame that I stretch nichrome wire over. Put the juice to it and you are good to go :)
