My Sherlock Holmes Thread (Previously: "Source for wide wale corduroy?")

Looking into doing a Sherlock getup, and I'm having trouble finding corduroy with a wide enough wale. Biggest I could find is this 7 wale:

Doesn't look nearly big enough.

Any ideas?

Thanks! That looks much better than what I had found.

Re: Source for wide wale corduroy? (Sherlock Holmes.)

I bet that would work, but from the pic it doesn't look like there's enough flat space inbetween the bumps. But...I'm sure to anyone just seeing it without a pic in front of them they wouldn't know the difference

Re: Source for wide wale corduroy? (Sherlock Holmes.)

And if I can't find anything else, this will definitely be the best option.

nick are you planning a full costume or just the coat? I talked to magnoli a while back about possibly doing a full outfit. I already bought a SA pipe and hat and am looking for more items like stun prod, possibly belt, and glasses before tackling the clothes.

Re: Source for wide wale corduroy? (Sherlock Holmes.)

I am going to be sewing myself the entire outfit. When? As soon as I can locate fabric in my budget. I LOVE the fabric linked to here, and it's super cheap, but I'm holding out a little while long to see what else I can find. I'm in no rush.

I'm pretty far into my build of his four fold surgical tool kit.

Re: Source for wide wale corduroy? (Sherlock Holmes.)

I've got nowhere near the leather skills to offer them for sale, but just enough to whip one up out of spare pleather around the house.

heh, I was at Joann's not too long ago and saw their corduroy and thought of this thread, but I didn't think it looked like a large enough wale, but it was the 4.5. I don't know how much was on the bolt. Do you know how much you're needing?

Re: Source for wide wale corduroy? (Sherlock Holmes.)

I think for a frock I'd need between 5 and 6 yards.
That brings up another topic. I'd been assuming I'd do this by drawing up my own pattern, but does anyone know where I might find a pre-made pattern?

Re: Source for wide wale corduroy? (Sherlock Holmes.)

Was finally able to get enough of this fabric for the coat.
I'd rather not move forward, though, until I really nail down the pattern.

Anyone have any sources for good frock patterns?

This is always a good base for a frock coat pattern. The lapels look a little smaller on this version than on your Homes coat, but thats easy to adjust. Literally just draw the shape you would rather them be on the pattern. The lapels are an outer edge of the garment, so changing the shape won't effect the fit any. Be sure to make the coat out of muslin first, so you can see what else you need to do to the pattern or fit before you go to your real fabric.

Re: Source for wide wale corduroy? (Sherlock Holmes.)

Chris,
Thanks for the tips.
I've made a few coats in the past, but never made a muslin version first. I think that might be a good idea in this case, to achieve a better fit. Question, though. After you've fit and properly adjusted the muslin version, do you remove all the seams and use that to cut the real fabric?

I seriously think this stuff looks perfect:

And it was CHEAP. On sale at Jo-anns, less than four bucks a yard.

I'm now starting to wonder what I'll do for the vest fabric. Been looking into inexpensive fabric printing, but if that doesn't pan out, I can always fall back on iron-on.

That's a poster pic that doesn't reflect the color very well. Here's another:

Wow, you think that vest was one of theirs? I'll contact them.

Re: Source for wide wale corduroy? (Sherlock Holmes.)

I did a bit of research (just for the fun of it), and it is indeed possible, but not sure.
The costumes were exposed at London, so is also possible that the vest was custom made, or bought from these guys...
