My Serenity Grenade

Hi all

I have been working on this on and off for a while now, but finally I have nearly reached the end.

Being a fan of firefly and Serenity, I wanted to make something from it for my collection, so decided on the grenade. I suppose it was the simplest bit to make, but at the same time was appealing as it done something.

I made it on my lathe and milling machine, and made everything myself except the spring. No satisfied with it just being a static model which would have been far easier, I wanted it to open and the red panel on the front to glow when open. The cap has to be turned to allow it to pop up via a spring, and the sliding metal tube inside is a fixed length so it only opens so far. When finished the red panel which is opaque resin, will have a bar LED inserted into it and I have yet to find the contact switch that will turn it on when the lid pops up. (I was thinking along the lines of a simple light sensitive switch, so cap lifts up and light comes on.)

As for size as I could find no reference to it other than the deleted scenes on the Serenity DVD, so I extrapolated the size of it from when Mal holds it in his hand prior to throwing it. I have a chart I made of twenty different size hands, and using an average hand size work the size from that. While some people have big and some small hands, most people fall into the average hand size, so I used that. It might be a few millimetres bigger or smaller than the film used one, but IÂ’m happy with it.

ps, if the cap looks a tad wonky, its because its not glued in place, I just balanced there for the picture.

Hi m8

I did see that when posted and took down some details. The only thing I found odd was the cap sizes on that and the depth of the tapered base. I have included a screen capture I worked from, (taken from the extras on the dvd) and the cap measurements are visually not equally ½”, the top bit with the slot in is considerable higher than the cap collar. (Even taking into account the slight angle it’s being held at.) Also the tapered base looks longer and more tapered in the screen capture. It’s no big deal really, so in the end I decided to go with the screen picture for visual construction, and used your measurements for reference.

No problem....unfortunately, I no longer have any pics of the hero grenade (sold it to another collector), so I can't be of more assistance.

The one I had was one of two I've ever seen that were lighted (others were unlighted stunts, all sold through PSoL). Keep in mind, I made my measurements w/ an off-the-rack Stanley tape measure, so I could only get them SO accurate....perhaps I was off a bit here and there. ;)

And by all means, do NOT think of the "sketch" as an accurate representation of dimensions, only the numbers. I made the thing in paint, so I did what I could. The taper and length on the bottom *should* be accurate in size, although the picture doesn't look appropriate for the measurements. If that makes sense... lol

Try a normal open magnetic switch like used in alarm systems. Embed a magnet in the flange of the top and put the switch in the body.

Very nice working prop -- it is so much funner, when you can "play" with your toys..

Nicely done. Can't wait to see it when you have it completed.

Cheers.

That's hot man, nice work. I wanted to pretty much the exact thing - just via a 3D printer rather than milling it (as I can get access to that easier). All I'd add is the wall thickness on the rim is a bit larger than I think it should be, but everything else looks sweet.

Hi all

Don m8, the wall thickness, I know. The screen used one in the picture looks like alloy, but mine being resin needs to be a bit thicker for strength and also to hold the locking pin the cap is held down by in place. The best way round this was to make it a bit thicker, to avoid either the neck or cap retaining pin from breaking.

As for the magnetic switch sounds a good idea, one I had not considered. Just need to see if I can get one small enough.

many thanks

:) Don

That's sweet. I made one from PVC just a static job, but yours is fantastic. You must cast that and offer as a kit I'm sure you would sell atleast one. ME . :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup
