My Rocketeer Project *Updated 3/30/09* REPLICA BUCKLE

Re: My Rocketeer Project

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD!!!

Well, I ended up forgetting that the sides of the gauntlets need to be much wider so that the tubing will fit under it. The side stitching is much further in, and not on the edge like I started to do. I tried stuffing the tubing in as I went, but it was a no go.... And I need to rethink the leather that wraps around the Control Button Mounts

So.... back to the pattern drawing board! Good thing I have all that leather, eh??? :lol

Re: My Rocketeer Project

:cool you actually read my mind! Today I bought the leather to make the above parts and lets just say... I can make a BUNCH of them. The smallest hide my Tandy store had in stock was 17sq. ft. ... eeep! But I know it's a tough piece for a lot of Finheads to replica, so after I work out all the snags I'm thinking of doing a SMALL run. Or at least putting together a "kit", since I'll have left over supplies like rivets and grommets, and of course leather. We'll see!

Jeff

I'd love to get in on a finished version of this... :thumbsup

Re: My Rocketeer Project

I'll keep you guys in mind when I get to that point!

What I'm thinking about is having people purchase the 2 sets of gloves themselves, so they know that they fit right, and then send the outer glove to me to modify.

I'll mess with the pattern more tonight and see what happens!

Re: My Rocketeer Project

Ok... I went back and redesigned the pattern and I think I got it! I needed to widen the sides to overlap the tubing and also made sides for the Control Button mount.

With the main stitching finished, and detail parts laying on top. The "arrow" part will be tucked under the Control Button Mount.

And a test fitting on the glove

:cool

Well I'm off to bed... and to give my fingers a chance to rest from the hand stitching!

Re: My Rocketeer Project

That looks great, Jeff!

Quick question, though... shouldn't the leather be darker? Are you planning on dyeing the leather or leaving it as is?

Either way, you've done a great job!

Re: My Rocketeer Project

Thanks guys! And yes I'm dyeing both pieces! I picked up 2 colors of brown to test.

Re: My Rocketeer Project

I have the helmet and pack kits, and have been thinking about how I want to display them. What I'd really like is a harness and the glove controls to go with my pack, so that when I display it, I can mount it to the wall with harness and gauntlets attached, as if it was a real piece of hardware that saw service, and was now on display in a museum. My pack is going to be aged a little, as if it was built in the '30s and now on display in 2007 :)

So do you also have plans to make the harness? I think I remember Bob or Clint talking about a possible harness offering, but I need to check back.

So major props to you for making the glove controls!! Most people don't get that far! :)

Re: My Rocketeer Project

Yeah, they've tried to get the harness made for years, but nothing so far. It's a fairly complicated piece...

If you want to see a great fan-made harness, go over to the finhead central board. One of the guys posted pics of his harness just this week, and it is awesome!

Jeff, I'd love to see what you come up with for a harness, too!

Re: My Rocketeer Project

Yeah the harness will be tackled soon! It's a daunting beast! For that one, I'm thinking about talking to one of my friends that's a seamstress, no way in hell I'm hand stitching that! :lol I think her machine handles light-med weight leather. I need to start working on the patterns. uuugh :wacko

Re: My Rocketeer Project

Utinni,

This is amazing work! I went to order the gloves you linked to, but they list the sizes available as 5 and 6 - but then on their sizing info page, they say that Men's small is the equivalent of 8 and they go UP from there! Can you clear this up at all? Also, should I order a size larger for the outer glove?

You've got me all thinking about Halloween '09!

(Yes, I know that's two Halloweens away)

Re: My Rocketeer Project

I have small to medium size hands. For the HAU6P Flyers Gloves I got Small and they fit me really well. And for the David Morgan, I ordered size 10. They seem to be a perfect fit for me over the other gloves. Since the tips of the Morgan gloves do get folded over for the stitching, it helps tighten them around the fingers. I was a bit worried about excess near the bottom of the thumb area, but once stitched and it's over the other glove it went away.

Re: My Rocketeer Project

Looks amazing so far... really following this thread with GREAT interest. I am in the process of getting a harness made for my Rocketpack. Based on screen used pics from Rocketbobs site and other reference. Let me know when you start to tackle the harness as to HOW you are going to attach it....

Re: My Rocketeer Project

I worked a bit more on the gauntlets today!

I whipped out the right hand gauntlet in a few hours, along with the tubing cover.

On the left gauntlet I added the Control Button Mount.

I also added the tubing covering, punched the holes for the grommet, rivets and Control Button

Re: My Rocketeer Project

Update!

Today I picked up the materials for the wrist strap. There are 2 versions of this, one is Velcro and the other is a leather strap with a snap. From what I can tell, the velcro version is on the Hero set, and that's what I went with. However, I think for the time period and look of the Rocketeer, I'm thinking about doing a set with the leather strap and snap for my costume.

The materials along with a finished dyed strap

Both Gauntlet pieces dyed. The pictures make it look much darker than they actually are. But I'm thinking about doing them lighter on my next pair.

Testing the 2 pieces over the glove, the rivets are not yet set.
