My not-so-budget Jack Sparrow build

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

my mark one braids were....

1. an old ladies gray wig - my wife braided two braids while still attached to the scalp - she had beads from a jewelry kit that she placed on the ends.

2. I then used super glue and glued the beads to the hair

3. and then glued the top most braid "together" and then cut the braid off at the top

4. now I had two loose braids roughly held together with super glue and "braided"

5. I then grew out my beard

6. halloween night I "glued" the extensions on - hair on hair (not to my skin)

7. to remove - scissors.

it was "budget sparrow" to say the least, but it did the trick

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Again, thanks for the links Moony. They helped me understand a bit more how to hold the actual braids together. Still didn't solve my "I can't stand theatrical glue" problem, but I guess I'll just have to figure that one out on my own. And yea, there are a lot of threads over on KTTC that are probably very useful, but their search function, as far as I can tell, is considerably less useful than the one here on the RPF. Especially when half the threads that come up are "Look how awesome a Jack I am" threads.

And thanks Mojo, that's probably how I'll end up doing it, but with my hair instead of a wig.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Yes. The proclaim hair glue is what I used when I had facial hair for mine and if you put enough beard har in front of it, you can't even tell. It's a might painful ripping off tho. One time, after copious amounts of rum, and not wanting to deal with it properly, I ripped them out leaving two bald spots
under my chin. Not fun...lol!

But quite honestly, that would be the way to go. I've even used a couple of dabs on my fake facial hair to help with the hold of spirit gum. (I too hate that stuff, but you do what you can).

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Well, I just got my order from costumebase and it's an all-around disappointment; moreso than usual. The shirt is OK, not exactly screen accurate, but considerably better than my previous shirt. For the money though I think there are better shirts on ebay. The sash is really thin and only printed on one side. I was expecting the printing, but not the flimsiness. The buckles were exactly as I expected, pretty darn small. The sun buckle is fine, but I need to replace the Anamaria buckle with a better one. I'm not even sure if I'll still make the baldric. They actually included the belts and baldric with the buckles, I don't know why, but it'll probably take me weeks to get that smell out of my house. I mean really, these things smell absolutely terrible.

And finally, the biggest disappointment: the pants. I am 100% positive that these things were patterned off of a pair of teenage girl's capri pants. They're VERY tight in the seat and embarassingly low waisted. They're also made out of a twill material, not the cotton duck pictured on ebay, and are nowhere near durable. Every time I button the fly it feels like they're going to rip apart. These things are absolutely awful. Can anybody point me in the direction of a better pair of pants with a large, extra roomy seat and a high waist? I don't want to spend a fortune, but I can't wear these.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I was expecting some of it, but the pants completely surprised me. I've already inquired about a refund. He was cool about it when I had to return a Han Solo costume a couple years back, so I've got my fingers crossed.

I'm thinking I'll get the sash (ticking material) from Jo-Ann's, one of the shirts linked in your sig, and I might just go Black Pearl and not get the Anamaria belt for a while. I plan on keeping the sun buckle because it doesn't seem all that undersized like the others. So that just leaves me with the pants issue. Any recommendations?

Dude seriously check out ALL the links I posted. Costume base is easily the biggest beginners mistake you can make. When it comes to Jack unless you're making the stuff yourself you have to shell out the $$$.

I would try to get a refund - their stuff is 100% garbage. Everything is wrong. I'm telling you man - the best thing you can possibly do is check out KTTC and sign up. You'll save yourself A LOT of bloody headaches in the long run ! When if comes to Jack you are wasting your time with the RPF. The resources and guidance you seek is on KTTC.

To quote Jack:

It shall all have to be redone! All of it ! And let this be a lesson to the lot of you !

God speed

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Again, the search feature over there has not helped me at all. I don't want to wander around on that forum aimlessly because I don't have ALL THAT MUCH self control when it comes to costuming and if I spend too much time over there I WILL let myself go. And I really don't want to do that. So instead of letting myself fall into the money pit, I'm asking my RPF brethren for some advice.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

But if you are serious about your Jack and want to set a budget first we can steer you to calmer waters.

You have to start with a budget. Piece mealing a Jack costume will just get you deeper into debt. Providing you links to different things is going to be difficult because there are so many parts.

First - Pick one of the Jack costumes from the movies you want to portray. Boots and coat will be your two most expensive items unless you make the boots in which you have to buy the suede AND the coat which you can find pattern from Simplicity.

Second - Start asking about specific parts. If you plan on making your own stuff we can help you there. If you plan on buying stuff we can help you there but most of the work has been done....overdone if you ask me.

Third - Heed our words! We have been there as Moonie stated.

Lastly - Stick to "close enough" because screen accurate will kill you budget.

thats true.. you dont have idea how much ive spent on 5 years.

and still a little thigs to finish...

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Sorry Moony. I've invested a lot of money in costumes and I'm running out. Surely that's a good reason.

OK, well, as far as which movie I'm going for: I don't care. I can mix and match. I don't particularly like the brown pants, and that's about as far as I care.

And as for budget. I've got the boots handled, thrift store shoes and suede leather from Tandy. The sash is basically taken care of with Jo-Ann's, I checked out the ticking and liked it, so I'll buy a few yards of that. The leather gear basically costs me nothing, and I don't need all the extra bits hanging off the belts. I might pick up a rabbit skin or two next time I go to Tandy for the pelts. I already have a wig, and I don't want the coat. I've got the material for the waistcoat and hat. Basically that leaves me with the shirt and pants. I really like the shirts linked in your sig, I'll almost definitely be buying one of those. As for the pants, I'd like to keep the price as low as possible while achieving the right fit. The details don't have to be spot on, like the buttons, just so long as they're somewhat close. The fit is the most important thing to me, followed by the color. I can always tweak the color later if necessary with some rit dye. So I guess my pants budget would fall under $60 IF POSSIBLE. If not, just as close to that as I can get.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Well I guess for RPF Costumebase will have to suffice.

Only problem with Costumebase is it is made for small Asian people. Everything they make is about 25% smaller than the actual items. Buckles, belts, rings, etc. Not to mention they steal the designs from other Screen Accurate makers.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

For the best shirt click the link below my siggie. $35.00 from Paulette. You can't go wrong and it will be your most SA piece.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

If you can sew, the Simplicity Pirate pattern has a pretty good pants pattern. If you want to alter it to make it screen accurate, it's possible, but even as-is, it's pretty good...

Also, as a newbie Jack... I registered for the KTTC about 2 weeks ago and still haven't been confirmed. Is this normal? I don't have any terribly pressing questions, but I'd like to be a part of the community.
