My not-so-budget Jack Sparrow build

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Waist: 38" (but it's around the hips, so it's not really baggy on a 34 waist)
Cuffs: 18"
Inseam: 20"

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Well, right now it looks like I'm all set except for the wig. I missed the end of the shirt auction, stupid mistake, but I'll bid on it next time around. I've ordered the pants, just waiting for them now. Unfortunately, it seems the good deal I got on the wig wasn't so great after all, as it appears I might have been screwed over by a long time member. I've filed a dispute and will be upping it to a claim shortly as I haven't heard a word from him since he told me "Shipped it today, I'll give you the tracking number tomorrow" about a month ago, despite having logged onto the forum once since then. So I guess pending the events of the next week, I'm probably still in the market for a nice wig for not as much as they cost on ebay. ($300)

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

OK, my shirt from Paulette shipped out yesterday, I should have it sometime around Tuesday, and my Jas Townsend breeches just arrived. Apart from being about 4 inches longer than I was expecting, I love them, they look perfect. I just have to use some color remover and then redye them with a bit of pearl grey.

Also, paypal just refunded my money from the wig I never received from Obiwan2, so I'm on the hunt for another for about the same amount of money. I posted a thread in the junkyard, but do you guys have any other suggestions or recommendations? Also, has anybody heard from Obiwan2? It seems he's completely disappeared, and I never talked to him before the wig sale, but I'm still a bit concerned.

Anyways, pics will come once the shirt arrives. I still haven't taken the time to make my waistcoat, but I'll probably get around to it in August sometime. Having the rest of the costume ready to wear will push me to work on it.

I searched around Keep to the Code a bit and couldn't find an exact answer, and it's hard to see in pictures. I believe Jack wears 4 rings, right? The dragon ring is on his..... left(?) thumb, and then there's the green one, purple one, and black/gold one? Which fingers does he wear them all on? Is there a way to size your fingers for rings without going in to a jeweler? Like a standard measurement for finger circumference that matches up to a ring size?

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Thanks for the link! Looks to me like the costumebase dragon and stolen rings are the best bang for the buck. The MR flower ring doesn't look bad for what it costs, either. Looks like the skull is the most expensive at the lower end. Judging from the zip code on their web site, Skinny Dog is located within walking distance of my house. Do they have a brick and mortar store/still sell rings?

It looks like bleach has no affect on my Jas breeches. I just stirred them around in what seemed like a pretty heavy bleach cocktail (1.5 cups bleach in 5 gallons of water) for about 20 minutes, and now that they're drying they look exactly the same as they did before.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I don't think they have a storefront, but they might...You should check it out for us. :lol :p ;) SD rings are sold at Disney, if you can find them there. I think they usualy stock the skull rings.

Right now, my rings I use are a MR Flower ring, MR Stolen ring, and Skinny Dog Dragon and Skull rings. (Thanks to Shylaah for the skull ring! :D )

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

It's too bad they don't sell all of them anymore. The thing I like about the costumebase rings is the choice of size. I can get the dragon and stolen rings in my exact size. I do have to figure out a way to size down the button ring from a 10 to a 9 though. What size are the MR rings? The various auctions on ebay have different sizes listed from 7 to 12, but I'm guessing they're all actually one size, right?

My breeches are almost dry, and I think something went a bit wrong, because they're purple. Not just tinted purple, I'm talking Joker purple. I'm hoping the RIT color remover will fix that. I don't think I can use bleach on them again, the fabric is already "fuzzing" a bit.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I'm going old-school for sizing down my rings. I'm using waxed cotton cord (the same thing I used for some of my hair beads) and wrapping it around the underside of the ring. The wax sticks to itself, so no need to knot, though I probably will melt a little extra wax on the ends to make sure they stay down. I figure it's what a pirate would do in that situation :lol

Also, I'm very interested to know if Skinny Dog does have an actual store, so please, keep us posted.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Well their website doesn't have a full address, just Long Beach, 90802. I'm in 90804, so I have a rough idea of where they could be located, but it might just be the owner's house. I picked up the costumebase left hand set and a Dragon Silver skull ring, so I'm done with my ring search. Only upgrade I ever intend to make is MAYBE getting the MR button ring.

Has anybody bought their wig on ebay? KttC is loaded with threads about making your own wig, but that's beyond me and looks just as expensive as buying a finished wig anyhow. The two that look the best to me are the Empire Worldwide for $375 and the Peaches9938 for $350, which I personally think looks like the better of the two and I'm pretty sure was the one I was sold before but never got. The wig is what really makes the costume, much like an Indy fedora, so I know when it comes right down to it it's best to just get the best there is right from the start and never have to go through upgrading. So what do you guys think, is Peaches' wig a winner?

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I say gor with Peaches (or Yordreem Creations as he's better known as). He makes some of the best stuff. I'm saving up me doubloons to get one of his Sparrow coats!

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Ah, that explains why I was able to find "peaches" anywhere in the search. Thanks, I guess I'll bite the bullet and get that wig. Those aren't his last 5 are they? I don't think I can place my order until after I move next month.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I don't believe so. You can contact him on his website, Yordreem Creations , and ask. But I'm pretty sure he's making them as long as people want them. He's even going to start replicating Jack's new wig for OST. In fact, he just ordered a bunch of the wool dreads he uses. Hope this helps. Cheers mate!

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Thanks. I think Jack's new hair looks kind of ridiculous, but it's cool that there are options.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

OK, I'm going to invite you all into my nightmare. I got my Jas Townsend breeches and these are the exact steps I took with them:

1. Washed in the machine with a little bit of bleach.
2. Washed in a bucket with a lot of bleach.

At this point they were still dark navy but had some lighter crinkles.

3. Washed in a bucket with 1 pack of color remover.

They are now dark purple.

4. Washed in a machine with 2 packets of color remover.

They are now SLIGHTLY lighter purple.

5. Washed in a bucket with one packet of pearl grey RIT dye.

A tiny bit darker and SLIGHTLY less purple. And now for pictures. Why so serious, mate?

And I don't think the photos really convey how purple they appear in person.

When I get my rings in the mail I'll take a closer shot of my hands. I'm pretty proud of my wrist wrap, which I made using Shylaah's tutorial, and my palm glove.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I just won some excellent boots on ebay that I'll be converting into Jack boots. They've got a good square toe shape, the right color and kind of soles, and they're already boots, so it'll make converting them easier. I'll be sure to document the process.

Still no rings yet, but they're coming from overseas, so I wasn't expecting them soon. And still hoping somebody can suggest a solution to my breeches problem, other than dying them back to their original navy blue, basically wasting the $20 worth of dye and remover that soaked into them.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Unfortunately Skinny Dog does not make the rings. They simply made the prototype and the master which was than reproduced overseas. He has stated many a times to not to contact him regarding the rings because he doesn't have them. This is what he told me back in 2007 when I first discovered his ring making MySpace webpage.

I am sure the manufacturer will be making more now that the new movie is in full production. I still see the skull ring at Disneyland in the POTC ride store and in the small jewelry store behind the watch store on Main St. I haven't seen the dragon ring or the amethyst ring in awhile.

Your best bet is eBay.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Yea, I'm a little past that now....... Got some costumebase rings and a Dragon Silver skull ring. They're in the mail, on their way to me.

I could really use some advice on the dying situation though, seeing as I followed the instructions you gave on KttC pretty closely and ended up with Joker pants.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

When I did my Jack Sparrow, I used some white shoe restorer to age the fabric (without actually damaging it!)

Just dipped a sponge in it then lightly rolled it over the fabric. Worked great on the Bandanna and Vest! Might be an option for you...

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Read my tutorial on breeches and see what you think:

http://jacksparrowcostuming.wikispaces.com/Breeches+Tutorial

Your color doesn't look that bad, but if you say it's more purple in real life, I believe you.

Your sash also appears too wide. Take that pic above and hold it side by side on the computer screen with your ref pic of Jack and note where it hits him on his body and how much appears above and below his belt(s).

My sash is 11" wide

I have been working on my own wig quite a lot, so let me know if you still have needs there also...

risu, are you a member at kttc?

We also have a locker on facebook
