My not-so-budget Jack Sparrow build

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I figured out the problem! Didn't end up having to angle off both pieces after all, just changed the top curve. In my head, that still feels impossible, but it worked, so I guess it's not. Fabrics are not my strong suit. Anyways, pics late tonight after I hem up the bottom and glue the cuff onto the shaft.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Good, I thought it should work, but thought, based on your one post that you had tried it already, hence my second idea.

And to explain it to your head: Basically the top of the shaft acts to "level" the top of your cuff, regardless of its angle. The angle only then affects (Or should affect) the angle at which the cuff joins the shaft.

Glad to hear you got it sorted. Can't wait to see pictures.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I'm pretty ridiculously tired right now, but here's a picture. The leg was at a bit of an angle, when standing upright the front sticks out farther.

I've gotta stitch around the cuff's hem, then pattern out the upper, stitch around it, and glue it on. I'll probably also make a pair of elastic bands to hold the boot shaft up underneath the cuffs. With the breeches tucked in the pressure does the trick, but I think I'll probably walk around with them hanging out a bit. With any luck, I'll get the rest of that boot and probably most of the other one done this weekend, then I can focus on the waistcoat. I'll probably also be finishing up my second belt in a couple days. Pictures of the first one have been delayed, they're stuck on my boss's computer.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Looking good! Glad to see you've got a nice, balanced cuff now! Those boots are really coming along.

How much did the base shoes run you? Those really fit the bill, and I've been looking at starting to upgrade my Sparrow slowly but surely.

Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see the boots and belts all finished up!

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I won the boots on ebay for $10 plus $12 shipping. A very lucky find. They're nice boots, and definitely never worn, but they were really dried out and a lot of the leather has cracked from the few times I tried them on. I think the glue soaking in will solve that problem, though.

I'm really proud of my belts, the first one is kind of bland though, so I can't wait to finish the second.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

First, a small boot update:

DSC02363.jpg

Stitched around the cuff hem. That'll probably be the last boot update for a while because I can't figure out the upper pattern (the shape of these boots is so dramatic that even though I was able to wet mold the toe I can't manage to stretch the leather to fit the curve of the ankle. The problem is compounded by the fact that I have to pattern the piece ahead of time and stitch around the edge before I glue it on. I'm pretty fed up with the project, so I'm going to give it a few days.

OK, and now the long overdue hand stuff pictures. I included one of the MR and CB button rings for Savvy. Also, the dragon ring I'm wearing isn't the same finish as the first one I received, I need to distress this one a lot to match the blackened look of the other one. And the gem on the stolen ring is purple, it just came out red in the photos. Left hand (none of these rings fit):

Right hand (I actually really like everything on this hand now, including the skull ring):

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Thanks! I can't wait to get them finished, they're a real pain.

I finished adding better buttons to my breeches (La Mode Hook 301, I didn't think it was logical to have the exact same buttons on the waistcoat and breeches, even if it was screen accurate). Then I blackened them with some nickel ager. I'm very nearly done with my Ana Maria belt, just a little bit more stitching and the black dye stain and it's done.

And I started working on the waistcoat pattern. I started with Simplicity 4923 and am currently adjusting lengths and the placement of the shoulder seams. Next up I'll split the back and straighten out the front, then pattern the pocket flaps, etc. I already have all the material on hand and dyed, so hopefully the waistcoat will be done in about a week. The only hold up is that I'm a bit confused as to how you close the thing up after you've turned it all right side out through the splits in the side. Just hand stitch up the sides?

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I had a pretty major setback in my waistcoat patterning efforts, but thanks to Shylaah I'm back on track. In the meantime, I finished stitching my Ana Maria belt and I'm now working on my pelts. I also got a good amount of black and brown shoe polish on my breeches and they look pretty awesome now.

My Yordreem wig has been ordered and I've been told it'll show up before the end of the month, giving me just enough time to make my tricorn before Disneyland on the 8th of October. I'm thinking I'm going to order a new shirt from Paulette because the standard size medium I got from her before has crazy long sleeves and I'm thinking maybe I should have gotten it in linen.

Anyways, here's a picture from a couple weeks back when I finished my Sun belt. The breeches still had the original buttons on them and whatnot.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

That looks pretty dern fantastic! This is going to look amazing when it's all put together!

I agree though, you may want to go with the linen shirt. That one just seems very heavy when compared with the screen used shirt.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I've spoken to Paulette and she's going to make me a linen shirt to my specs, complete with a more squared off Black Pearl looking collar, I'm pretty psyched about it. Anybody want to buy a virtually brand new Paulette muslin shirt in size medium?

I won't be able to finish my second belt tomorrow unfortunately, but I might still take pictures. I need to watch through the second and third movies to try to find a screen grab that shows the dye stain on the tail of the belt. I can't find a single image of it online and I've never seen any fan made belts that got it just right.

Also, tearing up my sash right now.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Nice belt mate!

And yeah...Likewise the sleeves of mine are about 2 inches to long on me as well. I button the left arm sleeve and roll the cuff, and the other sleeve I'll roll up in general. As to show of my effects, tattoo, etc.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

Starting to sound like you have been "bitten" by the Screen Accuracy bug. Time to change your thread to "Jack Sparrow no so much on budget anymore" HAHAHAHAHAHA~!

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I agree I've gone over my original budget, but I still think it's lower than most have spent since I'm making my belts, hat, boots, and waistcoat. When I'm done I'll post an itemized price list and then I'll see.

Got my compass from Mojo Turbo today, can't wait to mod it. It does look pretty corny in it's original state, doesn't it? It should look great when it's done though. Thanks Mojo for offering those here, just in time.

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

To be honest, I've yet to see anything that points to being able to do a good looking Jack on a budget. So far, I've determined that this outfit, done mostly screen accurate through the right dealers, will cost no less than $600. Unfortunately, in my opinion, seeing people do full "budget Jacks" end up as the laughing stock of the con, because usually where I'm from, at least 2-3 people try and go this route.

Ya know.... I 'kind' of agree with that point...
But I'm not sure that factoring in dealers is necessarily what people should do if they want a HQ costume at a budget price.

Making a budget costume would HAVE to factor in the ability of people to make their own. IE, buying the fabric... sewing it yourself, finding the buttons where they're sold as 'buttons' not JACK SPARROW SA BUTTON FOR MARKUP. Modifying/drafting patterns, trading...etc

For example:
I made my Joker overcoat for about $140 in materials.
If I wanted to sell it on Fleabay, it alone could probably go for about $400. much less the entire costume.

My whole (current) Jack Sparrow costume probably cost me maybe..
Frock $90 including buttons
Vest $45 including buttons
Shirt $16
Hat $20
Wig $30 (including childs' playset)
Pants $25 (modified)
Boots $50
IKEA:Sash $30

$306?

Granted, not all is SA but It looks dern close.

Belts jewelry dangles etc shouldn't cost someone more than $100 if again they're putting them together themselves. (Or have found the kids toy set)

Re: Jack Sparrow on a budget

I can't remember if I said this earlier on in the thread or not, but 'budget' is kind of a fluctuating term. For some people a budget costume is a $30 bundle of polyester in a bag from a local Spirit store, for others (myself included) it's any costume that costs considerably less than the costumes I've gone all out on. Just for the heck of it, and because I have plenty of time on my hands at the moment, I'll do that itemized price list.

Yordreem wig: $320
Paulette linen shirt: $68
Jas Townsend breeches: $90 with replaced buttons
Waistcoat pattern and materials: $40 including SA buttons that were actually cheaper than the next best option locally.
Boots and suede leather: $70
Belt buckles: $70
Belt leather/dye, etc: $15
Ikea sash: $30 (thanks again Tsuyosa)
Hat leather: $50 (and I actually already had it on hand anyways)
Compass: $25 (thanks again Mojo)
Pelts: $5
Rings and other hand materials: $60

Total: $843

My original plan involved buckles 1/3 the price (costumebase), the cheaper shirt, and a Yordreem wig I was offered for $150 shipped. None of that went according to plan, and I wasn't really "bitten" by the screen accuracy bug, because if you've seen any of my other costumes it's not a new thing. Even with the upgrades and added expenses though, this costume comes in a full $500 below my Indy costume and currently (not for long, mind you) about $2000 under my tenth Doctor costume(s), space suit not included. I'd say mission accomplished. However, since that number is considerably higher than most people's opinion of 'low budget', I will change the thread title.

OK, new pictures. The Ana Maria belt is still missing the dye stain, the sash could still get more roughed up, and that's the pre-mod compass. It looks very different now.

Found some much better waistcoat fabric at Jo-Ann's today. The front material is a 50% linen blend and was labeled navy, but I think it qualifies as aubergine. The back fabric is 100% linen and I plan on using some color remover to lighten it before dying it with some grey and a tiny bit of green to achieve sort of a cross between the black pearl and other waistcoat.

Also been working on my compass. Primed the whole thing, then carved lines into it with an xacto to make it look as though it's made of separate pieces. I'm now masking it off and painting one section at a time with a really crappy brush to give it kind of a wood grain look. After all the black is done and I've sprayed the dial with montana gold chrome I'll paint in all the ivory strips one at a time, then do a really thinned out wash of burnt umber over the entire thing and whatever wash is needed for the brass parts to look aged. Then a clear coat should seal it up nicely. Also already got the correct latch and assembled a 6 barrel hinge. A brass ring recommended in another thread is on its way to me as well.
