My not-so-budget Jack Sparrow build

Risu,

I've finally worked up the nerve to tackle making my boots. I got a pair of boots out of the 'bay, as well as some veg tanned suede. From the looks of it, you started with the toe section. Due to the shape of toes, I'm having a really hard time visualizing how to come up with a flat pattern. Any advice?

When I start tacking down the leather, where do I start? I'm thinking the very tip of the toe where it meets the sole. Work up the toe to the shaft, and wrap it long the sides.

Sound right? Any advice would be most appreciated!!! Your's came out fantastic!

Actually I did the toe last. I think most of my tutorial landed on page 8 of this thread. Because I had the stitching around the edge of the upper, I had to glue that part down first and work my way down. It wasn't perfect and I ended up with some wrinkles in the middle of the foot. I posted photos of my patterns, but every boot will have a slightly different shape and a different pattern.

Risu -

Thanks for the great thread. I'm a "viewer/learner" on here. I'm on KTTC and have studied the Wiki Jack Sparrow Costuming pages. My 5 year old little girl LOVES Jack and requested a Princess and Pirate party with her friends. I love Jack too and decided to put together a costume of my own. I'm a busy single Dad and decided to buy my stuff. Threads like this helped me find the right stuff and not get burned, so thanks!

I'm waiting on a bunch of stuff to arrive. What I do have already is an ACME -sash, Anna Marie & flower belts, and paisley baldric, Costumebase - flower, dragon, & stolen rings, Nobel Collection - skull ring I got off E-Bay for super cheap, Swag Arts - pelts, mermaid/snake vertebra charm, & trophy lace, Master Replica - Sparrow sword & flintlock, a good looking E-Bay palm glove and a second flintlock like the one in spy pics of OST. I've ordered CAboots - OST brown version boots, YorDreem pants, shirt, black wrist wrap, OST vest & wig.

What I still need is the compass, tooth enamel, and an invoice from Ms. Mazie for their jack beard. I'm not going to order a tricorn from ACME until I have my wig to measure. I don't really want a frock coat as I like the hero look better. I'm excited to get my stuff and see how it all looks on. I'm not sure if the shirt, pants & vest come pre weathered from Scott at YorDreem. I did weather the sash fabric I got from ACME and it turned out great.

Thanks again for the thread, it has been helpful. I'm in Huntington Beach, shoot me a PM if you want! Again, great job!

It sounds like you're nearly there. When you get it all in, please post a pic here. I'm curious to see how all those pieces look.

Here's a few pics of this years Sparrow.

Risu,

Out of curiosity, why did you cut out the sides of your base boots? Couldn't you have left them for added rigidity to help avoid boot slouch?

Thanks!

I cut them out because the original ankle boot's shaft was too narrow to get my foot into without the functioning zipper. Cutting out the sides allowed me to pattern the shaft piece to fit as closely as possible without stopping my foot and then I glued the front and back tabs to match that pattern.

im curious
when you were at Disneyland did you ask a cute girl with short hair to dance with you only for her to tell you she was Spoken for then told you off in a southern accent??

if you are here are some things you should concider

Yea, that was kind of odd.

No, to answer your question, I didn't have such an encounter. I did walk past a woman who yelled at me because I wasn't walking like Jack at the moment though.

I'm back at it!

A few days ago I ran my blueish-grey breeches through the wash with some bleach, turning them a wonderful lavender color, then dyed them brown. I still have to hit them with some pearl grey and hope that does the trick, but they're getting there.

Also, since Friday with quite a bit of help from Capt. Jack Savvy I've started construction on my brand new On Stranger Tides style wig! I started with a batch of dreads made of kanekalon purchased from Sally's. The first couple took FOREVER, but by the time I got to the 5th I was backcombing a dread every 15 minutes. I do worry that they'll unravel, but that's a problem for Future Daniel. Here's where I'm at right now.

They're made up of mostly Medium brown #6 with a little bit of dark brown #4 and light auburn #30 mixed in. If you ask me though, medium brown should be called dark and dark should be called "might as well be black". I've ordered another auburn, a couple chestnut browns, and 3 different blondes online, can't wait for them to get here so I can make some lighter dreads. I also ordered a new bandana, will be ordering all the standard beads and bone sail needle soon, and I'm looking for a good base wig right now. I went out today and bought leather lace, some close-enough Mickey coins from Jo-Ann's, and some feathers. Btw, if anybody wants to buy my Yordreem wig, shoot me a PM.
