***END EDIT***

Like many of you who preorderd the SideShow King Kong armature back in Dec '05 many things have caused it to be delayed, but it is now almost coming to being a reality and it will be delivering soon. I can't wait for mine to arrive, and it will be one of my greatest museum display pieces..

From the word go I wanted a full fured out static puppet statue based off the armature's measurments to display with it. I set out to start a prototype head sculpt based off the skull over a year ago, I got frustrated with delays of it coming out and I lost interest in doing it. Now that it is coming back into reality of arriving soon I started my prototype back up again.

I first started by baseing a sculpt of a skull I made from scratch based on the real skul, I know it is off a little bit in proportions, but it was going to give me an idea if I could pull it off or not, so I wasn't going crazy with it being dead on.

Here are the new pics of the sculpt in progress, I've got about an hour into it.
I gotta wait until the AVE's epoxy putty is hardend more before I can continue. The flash has kind of washed some of the detail out. I still have a ways to go yet.

The face may be a little too long, but that will change when I get the real thing in my hand and have a 3D refereance in my hand to base the skull off of.
If it all goes well, I do plan on making a few of these static puppets, depends on how many I can get out of one rabbit fur coat. :D Each head will/may be a custom sculpt and fully fured with rabbit fur. Please no in PM's or inquiries of this please, it is just a thought for now and I gott to see how this goes.

LMK what you think so far of my progress.

OK, face sculpt is done. It took about 2-3 hrs total to do tonight off and on.
The proportions are off a little as my skull was off, so it will be off. That will be fixed when I get the real armature to go by.
The flash washed out some of the details like the wrinkles and such.

I just gotta make a neck and shoulders to flesh it out some more, then I'll paint it and add some of the fake fur I got for it.

This is pretty fun. :D

Looking good.

I must admit, the head and face of the 1933 Kong has such a unique look that it's very difficult to replicate. I believe there were two versions of the puppet made for the 1933 film ( long faced and short faced version).
I made a mini head bust of the long faced Kong a couple of years ago (took me several attempts to get it just the way I wanted it).

So far it looks like you're doing a kick ass job. Hope to see more pics.

Thanks for the comps guys..
Tom.... I'll be PM'ing you about how the best way to fur this guy if you don't mind?

Darth Saber.... I remember your sculpt and I think I used some of it as referance as well.

The one thing with KK is that he not only has two faces, but those faces change constentaly as well.

I remember WETA saying during the DVD puppet recreation that the face was hard to capture and it even had givin them trouble.

Like I said, when I get my SS KK I'll have a better skull to base my sculpt on, so it will change. The big thing with this one was I wanted to see if I had any talent/chance to attempt to pull it off.

Thanks..
For this one I'll use fake fur I got at AC Moore as a practice run. Then I'll try a rabbit fur pelt I got.

When I do the full form, I'll get a rabbit fur coat and cut it up for the fur.

What do you think of the sculpt for a first try?
I know my base skull is off a bit, so it will make this off, but what about the sculpt in general and not accuracy wise at this point?

Here are the many faces of Kong in the movie.....

There is a lot of variation here and is open to a lot interpritation for doing this. I got these pics off the net, I'm not sure who's they are.
