The detail people are able to get on these is always amazing to me. Guess I suck as a painter :p Great job and thanks for sharing!!! :)

I want your Black Pearl (First Movie) Version -- but didn't see that one on ebay -- what's up?

Looks like I missed out on your COTBP version. VERY nice. Did you use the spinning toy as the base?

Oooooooooo! Nice! Any homemade CJS prop is a labor of love especially when you get to wear it, flaunt it, and generally tell people, "No I didn't buy it! Not it isn't ACME or Sith Camaro...I made it myself!":love

Thanks for all the compliments! Especially Capn Jack since ya know I like your stuff and PHArchivist for your help answering my questions!

For anyone wanting to know, I did use the toy for about 30% of the completed compass as shown. Basically I seperated it into 2 halves and used my dremel tool to get rid of all the embossed binding on the lid and inside. So what I ended up with was a lid and bottom that were plain black and smooth. every bit of the off white binding was put on by hand, inside and out. Even the trim circle on the inside around the opening for the compass wheel was cut by hand. The round part of the sundial was also cut by hand, I never found a washer I was satisfied with. I used the PDF file found online for the wheel on my Black Pearl version, but I took it into photoshop and completely changed the colors and added a weathered effect to it to make it look more authentic. Putty to fill in any cracks etc (I left a few just to look authentic) Real brass rod for the pin on the front clasp. Real leather inside the lid. Then everything hand painted. Not sure what else, but if you have any more questions let me know.

As a fun sidenote, I just found out that from the information I have right now, my Black Pearl version that I had on Ebay was sold to none other than Adam Savage, one half of the Mythbusters team!! I know he is into pirate stuff having seen the show, so it is an awesome honor if he did in fact buy it for himself!!

Now that is cool!

Even cooler, I just got an email from him stating it was in fact he that purchased it!! I am excited and nervous at the same time because his opinion means a lot to me considering how long he's been doing the effects and props thing! We'll see! :)

Well, if I was beat out on the Black Pearl compass, cool that I was beat out by the Mythbusters Guy -- my boy and i LOVE that show.

You did a GREAT job on your compasses -- putting all that rasied rail on by hand must have been tedious, but it looks fantastic....how did you do the circle raised rail -- it looks flawless.

Here's a link to some photos of all the Jack Sparrow compasses I have, and there is one or two pics that shows the NEW Disney Compass toy -- it would be a LOT easier to modify as it is already the correct size -- all you would have to do is pull up face to replace the dial and then maybe replace the hinge if you wanted a metal one....

you have to scroll down to bottom to see compass pics.

Yeah it was tedious work! I actually got out my exacto and made a 45 degree template so I could cut them at the correct angle and fit them together correctly. And as far as the circle, same deal. Sheet styrene and a hot exacto knife for the outer edge. Then once I glued it to the compass, I dremeled it and sanded it up to the edge of the opening that was already there.

It had to be that way for me to be happy. The embossing that is already there is not the right size and even repainted doesn't look right to me.

Dr McCoy - OK, let me see if I get this right...
On the pic with all 6 compasses CLOSED...TOP ROW Left to right - either Acme or Ravensdream, then compass from the Costume Accessory pack, Zizzle toy....BOTTOM ROW left to right is New Disney Store one, Master replicas, then a toy conversion (who did it?)

I had seen the new one at the Disney store. The lid is nice being one piece and the bottom being the correct depth, but I worried about it being less user friendly than the Zizzle as far as how the bottom attaches. Might give it a second look though.

I have had people on ebay email me wanting to know if I m going to do any more of the Black Pearl version. I think I may have to make a master one, and make a mold of it and see if I can crank out a series of 5 or so. They wouldn't be hand made like the others, but they would be casts of all my work. Any people who know the molding and casting process, please any advice will help!

1. a wooden kit I built -- can't recall exact source -- maybe Yordeem Creations -- also makes costumes -- it is oversize and upon close inspection a little rough, but I got it for costume wear. Kit came with resin parts for compass trident which I threw away and used brass L-beams and a brass washer.

2. Toy I got off internet-- maybe Ruby

3. Master Replicas

4. Spinning Toy (most common on ebay)

5. Spinning Toy conversion I did (POTC version)

6. NEWEST Disney Store toy -- almost EXACT except for dome on top is a little flat....not sure why they did this as it seems to be modled afterthe MR version.

I may see what I can do. I would need some molding expertise on how to make the 2 part molds for a couple pieces. The rest can all be done as one part molds.

And I was right, I was just using the pic you had of them all closed! :)
Rubies is correct I'm pretty sure. I knew that one was available in a set of costume accessories at the Halloween stores last year.
