My GROOT wip

Hey,

I've been a reader of this forum for quite some time... but have never posted anything. With all the great foam costumes I've been seeing of Groot I figured I could give that a try. So I figured I'd put my work in progress in this forum to get as much advice as I can :)

I've never done a project like this before. The only costumes I've done are my Stormtrooper for the 501st and costumes for my kids... so I'm very open to any suggestions you all may have.

Day 1:
Begun working on the mask. Took me a few tries but I finally got the sizing for my head correct.

Then I sketched out the face... had a hard time picking a look... seems like there are a whole bunch of Groot pics online and each had different features... so I took what I liked the most :)

Day 2:
Began playing around with the heat gun to shape the check bones and face. This was fun. Very impressed what can be done with this foam and some heat.

Once I was happy with that I began to play around with the Dremel. I realized that I only have one size of sandpaper that came with the dremel so I'll need to hit the hardware store and get some smaller sizes for the details.

So that's where I'm at. Doing some digging around for lenses for eyes and starting to think about the body. Hope to have more updates by the end of the weekend. Again, being a total newbie on this I appreciate any feedback you got.

love it! i'm a newbie at making costumes myself-only ever made one- dark helmet last year. but I am going to try groot as well. I appreciate your post and am anxiously awaiting your progress-it looks awesome so far! keep up the great work! cheers

Being very inspired working under my huge maple tree in my yard. :)

New Dremel is a great help. It was $70 off at Canadian Tire yesterday! Perfect timing.

Doing a combination of using the stone circle and sandpaper to create some different textures and depth. Also used the heat gun to shape the eye brows and cheek bones.

That is awesome! The amazing things that this foam is being used for... I never thought about it for a project such as this... gotta think further outside the box. Can't wait to see how this turns out! :)

Next up, platform shoes :)

I'm 6,1. Going to make the shoes 10 inches... Plus the mask and I will be about 7 feet 9 inches :)

Platforms are built. Total height of the frame and shoes is just over 10 inches.

I glues the shoes to the base with filling adhesive and put 5 screws into it under the padding.

The Velcro was put as an extra support.

First walking test was successful.

Next I will be shaping it with foam in a can :)

Too bad! I had a couple of cans of foam left from my basement renos but it was the wrong type. This was gap and cracks and I needed the kind that really expands. Oh well... I see what else I have around the house to use :)

Made some changes to my Stormtrooper mannequin so I could use it to begin glueing it all together.

Needed it to be free standing so I could easily work on all sides at once.

Measuring where the top and bottom will connect.

And doing more walking. Quite comfy... If comfy feels like walking like a tree :)

Sports hoodie was on sale at Walmart for $11. Velcro shoes were $10. Pants I had in closest for years.

Black undercoat painted on.

Painted eyes on play glasses I found at the Dollar Store. They don't look this creepy in the mask :)
