Hi Guys,

I am just starting the DV route. ANH route to be precise and I managed to get hold of a GH Face and dome. I believe this may be one of the extra casts that were made with the thinner neck. I'm no expert yet but thought this might be a good start.
I also have a 20th Century face coming that I have been told will look better?
I'm pretty keen to make this face look better. I did download this picture from here if you want it removed please say and I'll take it down

I can see where the errors exist but I'm not sure how best to approach them. I don't want to mess this up. Does anyone here have a better way/ clearer way of explaining it to me?
I think this will be a slow road to the finish but I would like to do this properly from the start.
I have some Kurtyboy grill, some VaderMonkey lenses and various tusks and have some Apple tabs coming for the crown.
I would love some input from you guys if there are any Vader specialists looking at this thread. I really don't know where to start.
I think I will need to rework the pinch 'Y' on the widows peak of the dome.
Thanks for looking.......
here are the first photo's of my GH.

Are you trying to fully reverse engineer it or just to make it passable? And since you've already got a 20th C coming, why ruin a perfect GH?

As GH face is flawed how is it perfect? or do you just mean a perfect GH?
When you say fully reverse engineer what do you mean?
Sorry I'm a newbie at Vader and have never reshaped anything before so I need to be spoken to and have everything explained as if I were a child.

Well... I'll see if I can speak plainly... even though my replies tend to be lengthy and eventually veer off into talking about girls... but I digress.

Yes... I'm talking about it being a perfect GH, not a perfect Vader helmet. By changing the shape and features, you are removing its history, so you should consider that, when starting to work on something like this. You are changing it from a perfect specimen of a particular fanmade style of helmet into something else.

Fully reverse engineering is not just changing the most notable details here and there, but giving the whole thing an overhaul to correct all the things that was done to it to change it from the original. We are talking: filling and sanding and reshaping and cutting and rebuilding here. You know what you have and it has history... you will remove that history and it's sentimental value by altering it and you may not get it as accurate as you'd like. Personally, I'd rather work a Rubies into something more accurate than messing with a good GH or any other fan helmet, but that's just me.

If you wanna keep it as is... you can always get an armor for it to have a complete set.

****... how did I do with the explaining? Oh... and oh... I completely forgot about the girls... well... hey... did you see... no wait... :love

As i said before....take the 20th century faceplate und put your GH dome on it. It should look better than the complete GH helmet. You could still finish your GH faceplate and change the mask if you would like to change the look of the display. Or you could finish the GH as a complete helmet and try to get another GH dome for the 20th century faceplate:)

I'm sort of in the same boat. I have a Vader helmet that needs some work, but I don't want to destroy the integrity of the original maker. I would also agree with getting a less than accurate/cheap face plate to work with, but since I'm in the same boat, this can get expensive because you always get a face plate and then don't want to "destroy" what it is originally, so you get another one. It's an endless cycle. I say, just do want you want with what you've got.

I have no idea how hard tweaking that to be a passable face mask would be. Others have told you, go for the GH dome and the 20th Century face. If you are hellbent on modding that GH, I say go for it. I will respectfully disagree with TMG about "history" of fan-made pieces. Rip it asunder.

I thought the DS made a GREAT ANH basis ( thanks for posting that, DS) .. it still has some remnants of details found on the screen ANH.. I basicly filled the chin vent in a bit and extended the neck and that was it..feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

Cheers guys for the help.
I think I will go for the 20th face and the GH dome. It seems to be the way to go.
I have a down payment on the face so when I get it I'll start some pms and posts.
I can't wait!
Does any one have a GH dome they don't need? I could always have some fune with the complete GH.......

Well, Qui... he can mod it all he wants... I was just asking how much and how committed he'd want to be and not get stuck in the middle and abandon it. In that way there are a history of the helmet to consider before digging into it, as you are removing history and specific value, to something uncertain.

When modding the 20th C chin vent... remember not to make the added neck area flat, which is a common mistake, but rather try to follow the inherent curve of the neck when doing it. It will be more difficult, but will make it look much better.

Valid point TMG. Thanks.
I am and will do alot of research first about this helmet as I want it to be a great replica.
I hope you are all patient people because I am going to need alot of help as you Vader experts on this board are far more versed in the Darkside that I will ever be :)
It's nice to see people sharing information rather than keeping it all to yourselves. I see that all too often in this hobby when it comes to Vaders and Troopers. If anyone has any photo's of reference that they can't show publicly I would love to see some via pm or email. They will be kept in confidence and aid me in doing this justice. I'm especially interested in the paint finishing and details if anyone has any?
thanks for all you help and advice so far and keep it coming. :thumbsup
