My Classic Captain America (PICTURE HEAVY)

Been wanting to do a classic cap for a LONG time considering how many people do the movie themed; wanted to take it back to the roots. :)

Inspiration:

Broke down and picked myself and my twin brother up muscle suits from Flex Design studios. They're incredibly friendly people with amazing products. If you've ever considered purchasing one, consider this an endorsement.

I had previously finished a shield based on the metal sled tutorial that is pretty common now. Did red, white, and blue to match the classic style. Stippled a dry brush of watered down black paint to add weathering. Then scrapped in some battle damage and touched up with silver paint to bring out the damage:

The majority of the costume is your typical cotton lycra in red white and blue.

In terms of gloves, I used the replica US Paratrooper gloves from an online surplus store. These are made of genuine deer skin leather

Using Angelus Brand acrylic leather paint (Scarlet Red) I painted the bottom glove:

To maintain the color across the cuff of the glove, I bought a deerskin leather hide from our local leather shop. This ensured when I painted the cuff, it would look like one coherent glove. Patterning and stitching the leather was probably the hardest part of this build. Luckily I have a "jeans" sewing machine, so using a leather needle made it pretty each to go through:

In a similar process, I painted an added a pleather cuff to a pair of black "Batman" boots. These are very easily found on ebay:

Snagged a military belt from a local surplus store... Hadn't decided the final belt at this moment. Test fit one:

You'll also notice I added two type of straps on the inside on my shield. One actual leather set to hold in my hand and one elastic set to stretch over my shoulders and allow me to wear the shield on my back.

Added piping to the front of my leggings and behind my elbows for a small detail. Briefs also complete:

Next was to begin chest scales. These are "Craft Foam" easily found at any hobby store, wrapped in my blue lycra and hot glued to the base blue upper shirt:

Now for the innovative aspect on my costume: the mask. Instead of trying to stretch lycra across my face, I wanted to ensure the mask was form fitting to my face. I began by making a mold of my head, filled it with plaster to make a bust, outlined where I wanted the mask to "grip" my face, and pulled a vacuum form of thin plastic over the mold. I then taped off where the mask would sit to my liking and cut away the access. This left me with a rigid form to build my mask around:

The plastic gave me a good base to glue the lycra and add the 2 seams down either side of caps cranium:

An "A" and wings finish off the mask until I can get the whole costume complete and sew up the neck seam:

Test 2:

Added the chest star and decided on a black pleather belt to keep with the classic theme:

After helping the brother complete his classic Thor, the time came to unveil the final products. We'll be wearing these to the STL Comic Con next year as well with a few upgrades (airbrushed shading on some of the muscle areas mainly).

The Classic Cap I feel isn't represented enough:

Very impressed with this build-a credit to Cap, for sure! Hey, which one of Flex' bodysuits did you choose for the undersuit?

I went for the "Super" size. I wanted to really bring in that comic/cartoon bulk. Obviously much bigger than the movie Cap.

Luckily with a twin brother, I just need help zipping the muscle on, and the blue part of the shirt. Stretchy lycra does the rest. :)

The only thing I'm slightly disappointed in is the length of the blue shirt sleeves, I'd like them to be a little longer, atleast down over the deltoid muscle. I may extend that before I reveal it to the comic con. That and hopefully learn to airbrush and highlight the muscles. Maybe some battle damage too.
