My brass and nickel PLATED SidKit Mal Gun

ya know i was thinking about painting the grips ivory, but then i saw that one there that you did...... didnt wanta be a copy cat but the thought crossed my mind...

i DO have the sidkit thumbscrews that i didnt plate so they are still silverish, but i just dont like them as much as the phil brass ones that i have.
i realize the brass isnt accurate, so i might brown them to darken um before i put them on

well i have been workin my arse off for the past few hours getting this thing together and reinfored so its srong enough.

First thing to do was the trigger mechanisim...... not hard to do at all...

I then followed the instructions on sids site with several exceptions.

first off my thumbscrews are brass Phil thumbscrews when i used some aluminum black on to darken

heres some shots of it in progress from start to well.... where its at now...

a few more focusing on the different parts of the gun that make it unique...

on the top strap, i did drill and tap it and put a set screw thru it to hold it on, its VERY tight... and it even looks like an adjustment on the site, so it blends well i think...

Now the magazine is going to be interesting...
it has several magnets in it, and i have mounted a magnet inside the gun which can be seen in the last picture in the above post.
the epoxy is still drying so well just have to wait to see if it works.

the last picture here is of the "finished" gun...
however the magazine is not attached yet,
and the grips are the resin ones that came with the gun that i hope to replace with wood ones soon.

just for fun, here it is with its resin brother...

i dont know what the heck the relection is doing, makes the gun look a crazy color

its really hard to photograph

When you photograph something reflective it picks up the colors around it, obviously, and it will pick up and exaggerate any light source too. Try photographing it in sunlight, with no flash, and with a direct light from above with no flash.

Hey David, you started to talk about the modifications to the trigger mechanisim, but never finished. Did you find a way to make the trigger pull a little greater? Right now the pull is very soft.

I don't mean to hijack, but for mine, I just grabbed a big handful of small springs from a toolbox at a local garage sale. :lol Then, I took the trigger assembly apart and experimented with springs of approximately the same size, but with higher tension. I left the "hammer" spring untouched, but replaced the trigger and "leverage" springs. Now it feels much more satisfying!

actually i didnt

i was just so excited to get all the parts together i never really modified the trigger pull
I figure, hell, its a fake gun, no need to make a big deal of it.
in truth i dont think the hammer assembly parts are really made that strong so i wouldnt suggest alot of snapping with it anyway

Ok.... well..............who wants to buy it?

BTW, i got the magnet thing working and it works great!!!
just put the magazine in the well and the magnet grabs it! i even tried flicking the gun around a bit and it held tight!

Ok time for some more glamour shots of this thing...

first up, the most expensive part, the frame!

this is often overlooked when folks are doing replicas, but this is a very promient feature of the gun that it has a SILVER frame as opposed to the brass body.

a few other of the finer details...

alot of work was spent on the trigger to get it looking like a case hardened S&W trigger.
i buffed the trigger, applied several coats of plum brown, after each coat buffing the peice...
then i used a gun blueing "pen" to dab some spots of blue on it and buffed it again to blend it.
the result is a very multicolored trigger reminiscent of SW triggers.

The barrel end plug was also treated with much care. i decided NOT to polish it, but instead use aluminum black to get it a very greyish black that is very dull in appearance to give the impression that it has been darkened with gunpowder after years of shooting. its the only part on the gun thats NOT "shiney"

The magazine was just an absolute ***** to figure out. I KNEW i wanted to use magnets so that it could be removable, but the HOW turned out to be pretty challenging.... In the end i used small super strong button magnets i purchased from Walmart..... NINE magnets are in the magazine itself while 4 are in the gun.... i used several peices of thin brass stripping i bought from a hobby store to hold the magnets in the gun. JB Weld holds everything in place here. This picture of the magnets is shortly after the JB weld dried so its still not finished.
I plan to paint over the JB weld so that it appears to be an empty magazine.
I have a spare magazine that i will then detail to have a cartridge in it..... this will be displayed along side the gun and WONT be able to fit IN the gun....
so the idea is that you pull the magazine out of the gun because your out of ammo and then the other one is full, ready to go......

the Last two shots are just beauty shots of the finished gun.

I truely do think this is one of the most beautiful Sci Fi Guns every designed.
It incorporates all the fine qualities of some of the most beautiful REAL guns, and then adds just enough Sci Fi flare to make it its on monster.

I still plan on getting the Wakal wood grips for it eventually, but for now im satisfied with it.

just a tip for folks wanting to add a fake bullet to it, im thinking about getting some "A Zoom" brand snap caps. they are machined aluminum snap caps avalible in nearly any caliber... i know the "real" gun shot 38 special, but 38 is just TOO small to fill up the hole in the magazine so ill be useing 357 magnum....
More on that later....

Man, the more pictures you post, the more impressed I am...

And I have to congratulate you again on the incredible paintjob you did on those crappy plastic grips!

Thank you very much.
and yes the grips are utter crap..
i really wish Wakal would hurry up with those wooden ones...

I have some neat ideas that im going to do..... even tho it will make it a bit UNcannon.... who cares!
