Hey guys, I've been a lurker here for a while with not much to contribute but early this year I bought myself a 3d printer. I've been having heaps of fun printing out my favourite Star Wars props and recently I've been teaching myself how to model.

Thought I would start a thread and show off some of my projects!

One of the first things I ever printed was Obi-Wans lightsaber, I found a model on thingiverse and had a really easy time printing it because of the great engineering behind it. I'm struggling to find the link right now but I'll hopefully update it when it turns up. Funnily enough this project is unfinished even though it's been nearly 5 months since I printed it :(

These pictures show the first couple of layers of paint, and some of the print lines that I didn't know how to remove at the time :)

My next project was the EE-3, this one has also taken longer than it should but only because I decided to make a stock out of real wood and stain it. The model was from Aprilstorm on thingiverse.

So far just the primer is on the body, which needs more sanding and filling, the first go of filling is on the barrel, and the stock is cut, shaped, and stained once. So far so good I think. Although I still need to work out what I'm doing with the scope. The models floating around are a bit funky so I'll either buy a real one or model my own.

Next up is my fav so far. The DL-44 which was from Portedtoreality, really nice model and easy to print as well.

I don't have many good WIP pics because I rushed it to get it ready for Solo but I'd say its 95% done. It needs the trigger mechanism inserted (issues with printing), it needs the windage knob painted and attached, it needs the grill cleaned up a little more and then painted, and it probably needs another go of weathering but I'm liking how it looks so far.

Next up is my first scratch model. I'm kind of torn on the Last Jedi and I didn't really enjoy Rose's character but I loved her electro prod so I decided to model one. I just got it finished this week and I printed and primed it over the weekend. I'm very happy with how it turned out and I'm quite a perfectionist so I'd say its quite accurate.

I've included pictures of the seams along the side, one seam disappeared very easily and one didn't but I've since sanded and primed again so it should be ok. In one picture you can see where I loaded in a different filament mid-print and it came out with a cool effect. Link to the model is here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2934166

Thanks for looking and thanks for inspiring me to jump in!

Those all look really good! What's the printer you're using?

Thanks Dann :) I'm using a Prusa MK3. There's a fair variety of setting changes across these models as well so they don't all look like the same printer haha.

That's what I've got, I just haven't finished building it yet!

Did you get the kit version, or pre built?

Are you using PLA?

I bought the kit to save myself some money and I'm so glad I did. I've ended up with pretty intimiate knowledge of how this printer works and I've been able to diagnose a lot of little problems because of it. I built it in one marathon 12 hour session but I've spent a lot more than that dialing it in and smoothing out weird issues. I'd reccommend joining the "original prusa i3 mk3 support and discussion" group on facebook, they've helped me out with a few things and chances are you'll run into some funny issues. For me it was my first printer so I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning.

And yes I'm using PLA, I havent graduated to ABS or PETG yet.

Thanks so much for the info. I wish I had done the marathon session, but I got sidetracked, and I haven't had much chance to get back to it. Gonna have to wait for some time off work.

It's good to know that the prints can turn out so great, from seeing what you've done!

More progress today, I'm on exam break so I've got a lot of time on my hands for fun stuff :)

I went out and found a decent shade of orange for the electro prod and I slapped on a coat of that, unfortunately there's a few seams still showing up so I'll need to deal with that when this coat is dry.

I also picked up another chrome rattle can to test it out, I'm not super stoked with the rustoleum one so I grabbed a dulux. Here's a test peice of plastic I printed.
IMG_6284[1].JPG

It actually turned out really well with three coats and steel wool between them.

I also worked on the EE-3 a bit more, I got the barrel filled, sanded, and ready for primer, but it started raining so I can't get a layer on yet :(
I stained the stock again but ended up with some drips, must have laid it on a bit thick. It is getting darker though.

Thanks for looking

Really nice work! I have an anet a 8 but still dialing it in. Just bought my first spool of plans and really gonna get this thing cranking as soon as I tackle some home projects first. Home owner responsibilities you know. nice job on the prints.

Thanks propmaniac :) I'm sure you've done oodles of research but make sure your A8 is safe, theres been a few cases of catching fire around the PSU and I'd hate to hear about any more.

Thanks Dann :) I'm using a Prusa MK3. There's a fair variety of setting changes across these models as well so they don't all look like the same printer haha.
First.. nice print jobs! Looks great!

Secondly, what's the difference between the Prusa MK3 and the i3 MK3 models?

A company called prusa research designed a printed called the Prusa i3 and this is their third iteration of it, but they made the machine open source, so you can download the firmware and built the exact machine without buying it from prusa. Other companies have used Prusa’s design and released their own i3 kits and now that prusa have released their mk3 other companies are doing theirs too. Typically the clones are built really cheaply so they are sometimes a little dodgy.

Edit: Also the official name of the machine is “Original Prusa i3 MK3” so often it is shortened.

Did a little more work over the last couple of days, only on the EE-3.

While the weather was too wet to do anything I decided I'd start modelling a scope because as I mentioned before, the only models out there are a little dodgy, like they've been converted from STL to 3M and back to STL about 5 times. I went to the scope comparison thread over on The Dented Helmet and grabbed a bunch of images, dragged them in to Fusion 360 and modelled from them. I've ended up with a pretty decent model and it's printing right now.
IMG_6300.JPG

I still need to model the clamps and the dials but so far so good :)

I also spend a few hours this evening sanding and prepping the body and barrel for another go of paint.
IMG_6293.JPG

Then I slapped another coat of the rustoleum primer and paint. I think the body will need another round of sanding and priming but the barrel should just need a light 1400 grit then a buff and it'll be ready for weathering! (My favourite part, I hate sanding but its what you gotta do when printing :( )
IMG_6298.JPGIMG_6297.JPGIMG_6296.JPG

Thanks for looking, I should have a pretty decent EE-3 to show off very soon!

P.S. Can anyone tell me why all my images are being uploaded rotated to the left? I've tried rotating the images in my files before I upload but it doesn't seem to help.

Nice! Did you have to print the barrel shroud in different sections?

Yes I did, and it's actually a solid piece. I think there were four chunks and then the barrel tip. My biggest battle has been getting rid of the seams in the barrel. I just realised in the pic of the barrel how many print lines are still showing, I guess it's better in person haha.

Quick update to the paint this evening, both pieces came out really well, the body needed a touch up of Black but not a full coat. The barrel came up really nicely so I masked it off and sprayed chrome on the exposed barrel part and the barrel tip.

At the end of this I’ll have a ROTJ EE-3 with the colouring scheme of an ESB EE-3. Stained wood stock, black weathered body, and chromed barrel!

All the initial painting came up really well on the EE-3 so I've assembled it and am going to weather it very soon. I'm going to try and have the scope all done so the weathering can be uniform though. Here is where it's at:

IMG_6305.JPGIMG_6306.JPGIMG_6307.JPG

There's still a few funky lines showing up but the weathering will take care of them, and also the chrome paint got a little scuffed over the weekend but I'm not worried. The stock greeblies are ready to mount and the scope still needs its clamps and mounts but almost there!

Finally did a pass at weathering the EE-3, and got the scope mounts modelled and printed.
IMG_6325.JPGIMG_6326.JPGIMG_6327.JPGIMG_6328.JPGIMG_6330.JPGIMG_6332.JPG

I also started a Defender blaster for my girlfriend, she's going to our local con on the weekend as Leia so I thought I'd better rush this one out :)
IMG_6331.JPG
The grip is printing as I'm writing this so hopefully I'll be able to get it done on time.

Any feedback is welcome, especially on the paint, I tried my hand at bluing the barrel and it didn't quite hit home I don't think.
