Re: musketeer reference material

dang nobody? googling is coming up with to much junk, I know that they wore a breast plate under the tabard and had some pretty specialized gear, but I am looking to build up a musketeer outfit and want to do it spot on.

Re: musketeer reference material

Are you looking for movie version or historical? If historical, what country?

Historical, France, Wiki had some small stuff, but at this point I am willing to go to the library or buy boooks on the subject.

Thanks! :D

Re: musketeer reference material

The Musee de l'Armee in Paris has a bunch of Musketeer gear. I had a look at their website (Musée de l'Armée), but there doesn't seem to be much information there. Perhaps you could contact them for photos or information.

Kind regards,
Magnoli

Re: musketeer reference material

Just found some great reference material via Agence photo de la Runion des muses nationaux RMN - Banque d'images d'art, reproductions de tableaux, photothque.

Simply do a search for "mousquetaire". Some GREAT stuff:

I think Indy has the right idea. A lot of what you're wanting is going to involve more research via museums and books. Also paintings from the time period you're looking into will help with the clothing. That's how a lot of costumers and historians figure out period garb. The new musketeer movie coming out may be fairly accurate for period costume as well. There's been a trend with movies coming out lately to go more accurate with the period wear. There's also Renaissance magazine. They may have a back issue or two about musketeers. Their site sucks to navigate though. No search engine.

From putting together a musketeer outfit I've found the most difficult piece to find is a period musket or I suppose matchlock would be a bit more appropriate. At least not without spending some decent money. This is the tabard that I use for my suit currently. Sorry I don't have a decent camera at the moment so the color is a bit off. It has a deep blue velvet color to it.

Couldn't find any pictures of me actually in my outfit. When I'm in dressed up under the tabard i usually have a shirt, doublet with detachable sleeves, period appropriate pants, long fold over boots, my rapier, an off hand dagger or knife of some sort, leather gloves, a sash, a leather pouch, a hat with feathers and usually a flintlock or two on hand. In addition to that i have a churchwarden style pipe I have in my hatband. The only thing I'm missing is a period appropriate musket and bandoleer. I would probably fit in with Indy and his bunch looking at their outfits. Hopefully that helps with an idea of what you're looking for in terms of attire. If you have a decent renn faire where you are that could be a good place to go as well for ideas and to get some period appropriate gear. Good luck.

Re: musketeer reference material

Steve,

I'd love to see some photos of your entire outfit! I've seen so few Musketeers costumes over the years. Here's another shot of my ensemble:

Re: musketeer reference material

Not a problem. I'll dig everything out and try and get some pics up in the next couple of days. I'll try to do a breakdown on the different layers of the outfit for you guys.

Re: musketeer reference material

Indy that looks fantastic, under the cloak what type of doublet are you wearing over the shirt?

Re: musketeer reference material

"All For One" (part one)

I decided to break this up as two posts due to the amount of pictures I took.
So here we go.

This is my base level for the suit. Just a shirt and pants and boots. I modified the boots with a couple of straps and buckles so they stay on a bit better when I'm fighting. This is usually my outfit when I fence with my group at the local renn faire.

Next layer is a doublet. The sleeves button up the side and can be removed for a bit more versatility.

Add a sash and belt. Got a Rondel lashed to the back with a leather pouch.

To be continued.

"All For One" (part two)

Here we add my baldric and sword as well as hat. I have a pipe tucked up in the fold of the brim. Can't really see it here. I usually keep my gloves folded over my baldric so I can get to them if I need them although sometimes I've been known to tuck them over my right boot fold. I like using a baldric over a sword belt since it's easier to take the sword off if I'm not using it.

Here we are with the tabard over everything.

And there we go... complete musketeer ensemble. The outfit's gone through several modifications over the years mainly due to fencing. When I do period outfits i tend to try and make modifications that allow it to be functional and still work within the period. Hope this helps get you towards the direction you're looking for.

Re: musketeer reference material

That's a great ensemble! Looks like we've got the same boots too. ;)

I've got to do some more fencing... haven't had a good melee in about a year!

Kind regards,

Re: musketeer reference material

Thanks man. Your stuff looks great too. I've always loved musketeers so it was really what I was wanting to do as a renn faire outfit. I was in the same boat as Rikarus trying to figure out how to do an outfit. Did some research and ran into a group of musketeers at the Kansas City renn faire out here and that was immensely helpful in helping me actually find a nice tabard. Other than that I got a lot of ideas from period movies.

The boots if I remember right I think were from either Museum Replicas or maybe Silvermane. I'm not the biggest fan of a lot of the weapons available from Museum Replicas but I do like a lot of their outfit and accessory stuff they have.

Haven't had a chance to fence for a couple of months. A little too cold outside right now. Probably pick it back up in the spring.
